The single most perfect duet in Brazilian popular music of all time, the joint venture of legendary icons Tom Jobim and Elis Regina in "Águas de Março",
from their album "Elis & Tom" is such a perfect combination of voices, rhythms and melodies that Jobim's composition originally recorded solo on another album is more well-known because
of the partnership rather than his own version. Elis needed to be there and she made the whole difference, along with the arrangements from César Camargo Mariano, her husband at the time.
It's a simple video made way before music videos become the new way and format we consume music, it's done in an apparent single take with the camera making
small movements. It shows the duo and a microphone on the top of them and middle of the frame, and at times it makes some slow changes from the of Tom and then
to Elis. I say apparently one take since I think there's a brief cut or image glitch when the camera moves to the mic that gives the impression of having a small
cut - maybe two takes in total. Doesn't matter.
What matters is the song, their voices and how such combination was conceived yet it almost didn't happen. As
shown and stated on the glorious documentary "Elis & Tom - Só Tinha de Ser com Você" the constant fights between Jobim, Elis and others involved were a frequent
thing initially when the album was being recorded in Los Angeles. Miracles happened, problems were solved and a masterpiece was brought to the world of music.
The clip is also fun to watch due to their chemistry during their performance, pointing out to one another when it was their time to sing the lyrics at a given
moment - for those who don't know the song there are parts that go like a tennis match with each small lyric being thrown from Elis to Tom and so forth until the chorus unite them both.
It's a song that it's difficult to have a perfect synchrony (or in my case to actually remember the lyrics). They seemed to have had a great time while shooting the video. I truly love this song, and the video too. 9/10.
