The president of this year’s Césars Catherine Deneuve bestowed the Best Film César to Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez
Jacques Audiard’s Mexican drug cartel musical Emilia Pérez emerged as the big winner at the 50th anniversary edition of the French César awards at the Olympic theatre in Paris although the success won’t necessarily boost its chances at the Oscars on Sunday.
Julia Roberts took home an Honorary César It won Best Film and Best Director for Audiard among several of the glittering prizes – a total of seven from its starting point of 12 nominations. The row around a controversial Tweet by Pérez actress Karlia Sofia Gascón appeared not to have harmed its chances in France with master of ceremonies Jean-Pascal Zadi beaming at Audiard that “We have to laugh …” The same attitude may not hold sway with the members of the Academy.

“Emilia Pérez” won Best Film from the French 2025 César Awards, a major win for the Netflix film ahead of the Oscars. Jacques Audiard’s movie had earned 13 Oscar nominations but then fell out of frontrunner status.
The film also won both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, though Zoe Saldaña, who has dominated the awards circuit all year, lost in an upset to Hafsia Herzi for the film “Borgo.” Saldaña though was nominated alongside Karla Sofía Gascón in the Best Actress category, and not in Best Supporting Actress.
In all, “Emilia Pérez” took home seven Césars out of 12 nominations, including Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Original Music, and Best Cinematography. “The Count of Monte Cristo,” a new version of the Dumas revenge tale, led all nominees with 14, and it won two.

It’s rare for a movie like “The Substance” to break into the Oscars race. Written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, the film is an intense, satirical and violent body horror thriller about insecurity and the pressures of the unrealistic beauty standards that society forces onto women both when they are young and when they are older. It is the kind of bizarre, wholly original piece of genre entertainment that you don’t often see competing for Best Picture.
But such is the power of “The Substance.” Once you see it, you understand immediately why it is being treated by many like one of the best films of 2024. Here’s how and where you can watch it right now.
Is “The Substance” streaming or in theaters?
“The Substance” is available to stream now. It is streaming for free on Mubi for all of the platform’s active subscribers.

Jacques Audiard swept the board at the 50th Césars on Friday evening, winning Best Director and Film for Emilia Pérez against expectations after its award-season campaign was derailed by the uncovering of racist tweets by its star Karla Sofía Gascón.
“It’s such a pleasure although I fear you actually don’t like me,” quipped a visibly moved Audiard as he received the Directors Award, which was announced first, with Anatomy of Fall Oscar and César winner Justine Triet handing it over. “I thank my marvellous team and when I say my team it’s not in the sense of ownership, but rather a declaration of love.”
Audiard also cited Gascón, who he has publicly distanced himself from in the wake of the tweet scandal, as well as co-star Zoe Saldaña, referring to them as “My darling Zoe, my Darling Karla.”

Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Perez” won a raft of prizes, including best film and director, at the 50th edition of the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, on Friday in Paris.
“Emilia Perez” won a total of seven awards out of 12 nominations. While Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofía Gascón were both on hand and nominated for best actress, they lost to Hafsia Herzi, who starred as a prison supervisor in Stéphane Demoustier’s “Borgo.”
Gascón made her first award show appearance at the Cesar Awards ceremony after laying low in the wake of her offensive posts. Although she skipped the press line on the red carpet, Gascón sat on the same row as Audiard and Saldana inside the Olympia theater, but didn’t seat next to them and didn’t seem to be on speaking terms.

Audiard won best director and best adapted screenplay for Emilia Pérez, and the film also took honors for best sound, best cinematography, best visual effects and best original music.
But Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who walked the red carpet at the Paris gala, returning to the spotlight for the first time since the eruption of the controversy surrounding her offensive resurfaced tweets, lost out in the best actress race to Hafsia Herzi, who won for her role as a female prison guard in Stéphane Demoustier’s drama Borgo.

Mediawan-owned On Animation Studios, the Montreal-based banner whose credits include “Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie,” “The Little Prince” and “Playmobil the Movie,” has shut down, Variety has confirmed.
On Animation Studios, which was launched by French producers Aton Soumache (“Little Nicholas”) and Dimitri Rassam (“The Count of Monte Cristo”) in 2012, was acquired by Mediawan five years later. The company quickly became a key animation studio in Montreal and attracted talented animators from overseas, boosted by a pipeline of projects based on famed IP’s such as the blockbuster “Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie” which ranks as one of the most-watched French animated films worldwide; and “The Little Prince,” which played at the Cannes Film Festival and won a Cesar Award, as well as nod from the British Academy Children’s Awards.

Dimitri Rassam’s Paris-based company Chapter 2 and Pathé, who last teamed on “The Count of Monte Cristo,” have unveiled the teaser clip and poster for “13 Days, 13 Nights,” Martin Bourboulon’s ambitious thriller set in the backdrop of the fall of Kabul and the takeover by the Taliban.
The movie marks Bourboulon’s follow up his two-part adventure saga “The Three Musketeers” which were also produced by Chapter 2 and Pathé and became box office hits in France, as well as sold to many territories.
Based on the gripping book “13 Days, 13 Nights in the Hell of Kabul” by commander Mohamed Bida – oversaw the exfiltration of the French Embassy and the local population fleeing the new extremist regime — the film was penned by Alexandre Smia with adaptation and dialogue co-written by Bourboulon. Chapter 2, a Mediawan company, is producing the film with Pathé, which is also representing the movie internationally and will distribute it in French theaters.

Exclusive: With one of Europe’s three flagship film festivals approaching half way stage, minds are already beginning to focus on the shape of the next two: Cannes and Venice. The former will be upon us before we know it.
As ever, there is no shortage of anticipated movies in contention. Indeed, one leading producer we spoke to remarked that 2025 is looking like “a particularly tough year, a much stronger year than 2024”. The surprise to us during our research for this piece is just how many big movies look like they will push to fall rather than launch on the Croisette. That’s not to say that Cannes won’t be box office. It remains the gold standard. The importance of both Cannes and Venice as launchpads is at an all-time high. Just look at how many Oscar nominees now start out at those two festivals — five of this year...

Since we've always loved French cinema, we follow along with the César Awards each year. Historical adventure The Count of Monte Cristo leads the pack with an astounding 14 nominations. Curiously the second most nominated film, Beating Hearts (13 nods) a romantic drama spanning 20 years, is Not up for Best Film. It premiered at Cannes to some negative reviews before an October theatrical release. Among the nomination leaders the Oscar-bound trans cartel musical Emilia Pérez (12 nominations) came in third.

The classic Gaston Leroux novel The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted countless times over the years – even Robert Englund played the Phantom back in the 1980s! – and it seems yet another adaptation is on the way. This one hails out of France, Deadline reports.
Alexandre Castagnetti is directing the French-language version of The Phantom of the Opera, which is said to be “aimed at a young adult audience and taking its cue from the Twilight franchise.”
Deva Cassel (The Leopard), Julien De Saint Jean (The Count Of Monte Cristo) and Romain Duris (Heartbreaker) are attached to star in the $20 million French production.
Deadline notes in today’s report, “Filming will begin this summer at the world famous Palais Garnier opera house, or Opéra Garnier, in Paris, against the backdrop of its theatre, backstage areas, domed roof and subterranean vaulted cistern, sometimes referred to as its lake.”

Netflix, Max and Prime Video are currently in the thick of negotiations with French film guilds to seek earlier access to newly released theatrical movies as part of an industry-wide process to update the country’s windowing rules.
France’s strict windowing rules apply to French and global streamers, as well as local free-to-air and pay-tv channels, determining the sequences of rights for each player. Their position in the windowing schedule is contingent on their level of investment in local content; a system which has allowed French production to blossom. Therefore, over the last few years, streamers — which invest less in French movies — have had to wait between 15 to 17 months after a film’s release to launch it on their services, while pay-tv group Canal+ has enjoyed a six-month window.
But last week, Disney+, whose SVOD window was at 17 months, got ahead of all other streamers by signing a pact...

The 2025 César Awards, France’s premier film celebration, has unveiled its nominations, with “The Count of Monte Cristo” leading the pack with an impressive 14 nods. The announcement sets the stage for a star-studded ceremony on February 28 at the Olympia Concert Hall in Paris.
The epic adaptation directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière dominated the French film landscape in 2024, drawing nearly 10 million viewers and establishing itself as the country’s top cinematic export. Close behind is Gilles Lellouche’s “Beating Hearts,” a modern Romeo and Juliet reimagining that secured 13 nominations and attracted over five million moviegoers.
Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” continues its awards season success with 12 César nominations, including best film and acting nods for Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldana. The film has already claimed four Golden Globes and is a strong contender in the international film circuit.

“The Count of Monte Cristo,” a three-hour epic adventure adapted from Alexandre Dumas’s literary classic, is leading the race at the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, with a whooping 14 nominations. “Beating Hearts,” Gilles Lellouche’s sprawling crime romance, follows shortly with 13 nominations.
A favorite in the Oscar race, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” is nominated for 12 Cesar Awards, including best film and actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldana. The French awards show has highlighted international performers before, notably Kristen Stewart, who won a Cesar nod in 2015 for her supporting role in Olivier Assayas’ “Cloud of Sils Maria.”
It’s worth noting that the two Cesar frontrunners — “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “Beating Hearts” — were also France’s second and third highest grossing local films in 2024. Both movies are produced by Mediawan-owned banners, Chapter 2 and Chi-Fou-Mi (the latter produced “Beating Hearts...

Once the City of Light’s newest and chicest movie palace plays host to this week’s Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris opening on Tuesday, one might hardly fault first-time attendees for the odd pangs of déjà vu.
Just steps from the iconic Opera Garnier in the heart of town, the Haussmannian unit that houses the recently opened Pathé Palace began as a vaudeville theater in 1868, before serving a more than century-long stretch as an upscale marquee, first as Le Paramount, later Le Gaumont Opera, and now, after five years of dark screens and design renewal, as Pathé Cinemas’ flagship Parisian venue.
As with the building’s familiar Haussmannian exterior, architects from the Renzo Piano Building Workshop sought to integrate old and new, accentuating light and open space with use of glass structures and mixed-use construction techniques similar to those of the Centre Pompidou and The Shard, all while honoring existing...

The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Damien (Nathan Owens) is destined to arrive in Genoa City, Wisconsin, this winter.
Being Nate Hastings’ (Sean Dominic) brother and possibly working for Winters positions Damien in Lily Winters’ (Christel Khalil) path.
Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) was a recent love. But he’s with Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope), and even if he wasn’t, Lily isn’t interested in rebooting her connection with Billy.
All factors referenced openly imply that Damien will become Lily’s next romantic connection. Though seasoned soap fans realize that nothing is guaranteed in daytime, with a curveball possible weeks before Spring Training baseball begins.

Henry Cavill's best movies and TV shows show the amazing rise to fame the actor has had as well as the promise the rest of his career holds in store. Born in St Helier, Jersey, Cavill made his feature movie debut in the period adventure movie The Count of Monte Cristo, establishing himself in the business and leading to roles in smaller projects. However, the role that took Cavill from a relatively unknown performer to a household name was Superman in Zack Snyder's first Dceu movie, Man of Steel.
Though Superman is still the role most fans associate with Cavill, he has continued to prove himself capable of shedding that reputation with other terrific and fun roles. He has played the villains in big action movies, taken on more comedic roles, and even starred on the small screen. With his commanding presence and searing intensity, Cavill has held...

Italy’s box office revenues remained stable in 2024, totalling roughly €494 million ($513 million) in grosses and 70 million admissions – which is just slightly below the country’s $514 million 2023 intake.
Disney landed the year’s top 3 titles with “Inside Out 2,” which grossed $48.3 million locally; “Moana 2,” which pulled $20 million; and “Deadpool & Wolverine” which clocked in at $18.7 in the Italian theatrical market, according to figures released by national box office compiler Cinetel.
But amid a dearth of Hollywood blockbusters, due to the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes, it was local movies, such as Italy’s sleeper hit “The Boy With Pink Pants,” that proved crucial to keeping the market buoyant. “The Boy With Pink Pants,” a teen drama by relatively unknown director Margherita Ferri about the harrowing true tale of a 15-year-old boy who took his own life after enduring bullying at school and online, became the year’s surprise...

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

Imagine a $75 million movie starring Henry Cavill — sounds like a surefire hit, right? Well, not for Guy Pearce. During filming, he had a lightbulb moment that’d make anyone rethink their perspective on heroes. It was one of those moments where you realize, “maybe I shouldn’t have met my hero after all.”

Pearce’s experience on the set of that big-budget blockbuster had him questioning things he never expected. But the lesson? Sometimes, the larger-than-life stars aren’t exactly what you’d expect.

Guillermo del Toro has a very interesting and respectable filmography, but there are a slew of films that the director never got to make. Be it Pacific Rim or Hellboy, del Toro has been able to deliver a very nuanced take on war, and violence, but there was one film that he never got to make, that could have possibly been pretty violent.
Blade II || Credit: New Line
While del Toro directed Blade II, the director abandoned a very interesting project that might have been a box office hit. The director is known for his interest in the supernatural, fantasy, and even science fiction, which takes inspiration from anime and other modern media. Guillermo del Toro could have directed a very interesting film, based on a famous novel, had not decided to deal with Marvel instead.
Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Left Hand of Darkness‘ sounded like a great film Credits:...
