Enthralling, uplifting drama of feminist rude awakening
Honestly speaking, I wasn't expecting too much from the beginning. I booked the show for afternoon matinee, but find out it's quite a discovery. Truthfully and honest portrayal of relationships gone sour, without resort to ultimate violence even though the plot can go many different directions, it's a very grounded progression of an abusive relationship from seemingly picture perfect beginning. Well shot and well acted, it's unlike other larger than life overblown Indian films, the plot, the performance are all quite convincing-rooted in reality, applicable to any culture. It's far more better than American romantic drama currently available in theaters. Especially recommended for female audiences, because the whole tale was told from female perspective.
Honest Opinion.
I didn't plan on watching this film, but my friends picked it, so I went along. The story isn't clear or engaging - it's preachy and tries too hard to sound deep. The main character doesn't feel interesting or real. The screenplay has a few nice dramatic moments, but most of it is boring as hell. Some conversations are well-written, but many sound forced, silly, or like fake-intellectual talk. The climax might seem meaningful at first, but it's actually quite irrational and over the top.
Rashmika tries hard and gives her best, but she just doesn't fit the role completely. She tends to overact and struggles to keep it natural. Her expressions are often exaggerated, and her voice doesn't quite blend with the tone of the film. Also, her appearance feels a bit off for this kind of role - she has a slightly boyish look, which doesn't help with the emotional depth her character demands.
Deekshit performs well, but his character is written in a very convenient way based on what the writer wants to preach.
Surprisingly, Anu Emmanuel, who's usually an average performer, gets the best-written role here and handles it quite well.
Rahul Ravindran's direction is okay - he gets the best he can out of his team - but his writing feels pseudo-intellectual and pretentious in places. He should've gone with a more fitting actress for the lead and a stronger music director to lift the film's tone.
Production values are decent, cinematography is good, music is just okay.
If you like boring movies that act like they're deep and talk about relationships and feminism in a "woke" way, you might enjoy it. Otherwise, it's skippable.

Honest attempt, but....
The movie barely leaves a mark. It explores the toxic relationship between a woman and a male chauvinist, but the issue is there's hardly any real drama that unfolds. Everything is predictable, every character is one dimensional, no organic progression in story and it's like every male in this world are toxic, which feels unrealistic to be honest. Rashmika puts maximum effort, but the writing lets down, none of the supporting cast stand out in terms of writing or acting. Missed opportunity 😕
A Hard-Hitting Punch to a Crucial Social Issue
Girl Friend delivers a powerful blow on an important social issue, with Rashmika unleashing her true women-power in a way that sends chills straight into male egos. Her performance is fierce, vulnerable, and commanding - the kind that stays with you.
Dheekshith Shetty's possessive and controlling nature echoes loud, adding a sharp and unsettling tension that drives the narrative forward.
In contrast, Anu Emmanuel is the lighthouse - the calm, clarity, and emotional anchor in everyone's life, bringing warmth and balance to the story.
Though the screenplay dips a bit in pace, the story itself is a banger - bold, honest, and unafraid to call out the core issue head-on.
In the end, Girl Friend hits straight at the heart of its message and emerges as a true winner - impactful, relevant, and deeply resonant.
