This Spy show is somewhere in the middle

I'm finishing up episode 2 and overall I like it, giving first episode an 8 and the second a 7.

The second episode does a nice job of giving us the background on the main characters and how they came to be. But as this goes on the whole premise becomes more and more unbelievable.

This show loses in accuracy and feel to another spy show that just dropped; The Agency. But Black Doves makes up for lack of accuracy, by swapping in a little cheeky comedy - that aims to not take it self too seriously, and at that, it succeeds.

Overall, 2 episodes in, im sticking around to see it through. Is it far fetched? It's off the charts far fartched. Is it entertaining with fun characters? You betcha. I'll try to post a conclusion review on page 6 after I finish.

    fun show, smart and challenging

Great surprise. Was introduced by my best friend, without any idea of the show. But after Epp 2, I am a fan. Smart writing, great acting, keeps you guessing, even for people like me.. Really hoping for second season, even though haven't finished the first yet.

Cross between the diplomat and the gentlemen.

But with it's own twist. Those that like to think, when watching will be pleasantly surprised. As said had no idea about this show til now, lots of well known actors, doing an amazing job. Not the roles you would expect, and all the better for the show.

Absolutely love the dialogue, " pushing two full humans out of your vagina counts!". About to start epp3, hope it continues to please.

    Helen the Black Dove

This episode was a lot better than the first. It was fun to see how Helen Webb got involved with the Black Doves and to learn a little more about the organization. It was also nice to see Helen and Sam get some answers about what happened in the first episode. Overall, this episode was easier to follow. Keira Knightley definitely steals the show as Helen. She's such a complicated character and you really feel her pain as she remembers her lover. I'm still not sure how I feel about Sam. It seems like he isn't in the right mindset for this type of work, and hopefully, they will explain his character flaws more in the future. It's not exactly action-packed so far, but I like the slow-burn angle and the fact that the show gives the characters a chance to shine before things get going.

    Gets Down to Brass Tacks

Right then, after a surprisingly decent opener, Black Dove Ep 2 has well and truly got its teeth into the story. No messing about here; this episode properly deepens the murky waters, pulling us further into the characters' rather tangled and often grim lives.

What's truly cracking here is the character development. We're not just getting fleeting glimpses anymore; the layers are peeling back like a perfectly cooked onion, revealing motivations and pasts that add significant heft to their current predicaments. The writing allows for those wonderfully quiet moments that speak volumes, rather than clobbering you over the head with heavy exposition. This is where the show really shines, giving its cast ample room to breathe and truly inhabit their roles.

And speaking of the cast, Keira Knightley as Helen Webb and Ben Whishaw as Sam Young are absolutely pulling their weight and then some. Their performances in are nuanced, compelling, and frankly, a bit of a masterclass in conveying internal struggles and complex relationships. You can practically feel the tension and the unspoken history simmering between them, which is absolutely crucial for a drama of this calibre. It's proper acting, this. Sarah Lancashire also continues to be a formidable presence, even in her more limited screen time.

My only minor quibble, and it's a tiny one, is that a couple of the secondary plot threads still feel a tad underdeveloped compared to the main arc. But honestly, given the overall quality, I'm confident they'll weave into the larger tapestry.

Ep 2 reinforces that Black Dove isn't just a flash in the pan; it's a genuinely promising series that's building something rather substantial. Still very much looking forward to what comes next.

Wallace is mostly right when he says Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was invented by a toy company. He was actually the invention of the marketing division of Montgomery Ward, an American department store, which published a coloring book along with a poem about Rudolph which was later set to music and recorded by Gene Autry.

The very first shot shows a London skyline, overlaid with with a graphic informing the viewer that the year was 2014. In 2014 most of the skyscrapers shown hadn't been built yet.

Helen Webb: Can we stop for a minute please

      Sam Young: Why?

Helen Webb: Because you dislocated my shoulder when you pulled me off that balcony.

[Helen slams her shoulder into a wall to reset the dislocation]

      Helen Webb: Aw, fuck!

      Sam Young: That was impressive.

Helen Webb: You should have seen me when I pushed two entire human beings out my vagina on the same afternoon.

Sam Young: Just another Wednesday for you, isn't it?

      Helen Webb: Fuck off.
