Incredible show and depth of characters

Even though they are out there, I like the fantasy

of a castle and going back to the basics with a big family..

I think working together with family is not done enough in this day and age of texting your kids to come downstairs for dinner.

The bonding and emotional sacrifice must be huge for the kids, since they vary so wildly in age.

I am learning a lot from all the builds they do on the show and being a city slicker myself it doesn't hurt to learn a thing or two about the outdoors

Thanks Natgeo for more compelling out of the box educational TV

    Better Than Most

I'm giving this National Geographic series a 10 as compared to all the other reality series out there. You may not agree with the specifics, but the premise of the show is believable. Sometime in the future, a family may be confronted with a catastrophe that will require them to live by the skin of their teeth and the barest of necessities. They need shelter, they need sustenance, they need to be able to defend themselves. Going by the first two episodes, I'd say they might need some protection from themselves.

Obviously, the show is edited. But I didn't get the feeling that it was semi-scripted, as I do with so many of the other reality shows. There is humor and drama, and just a touch of crazy. I don't want to give away any of action because I think the episodes should be watched without knowing what's coming. If you've missed the first two episodes, they are easy to find as they are being shown repeatedly.

The family is made up of the Dad, two sons and three daughters. As people, they are about as regular as it gets. As a family, they are pretty good representatives of our times. The brothers and sisters come from two different mothers, and the father has brought them together not just to work on the project, but he wants them to bond and become a family that is once again his. They're a good looking cast of characters too. You've got the dark-haired ex- military Real Estate business father with a likable twinkle in his eye, who wears his feelings for all to see; the eldest son who wants to prove some things to his dad as well as to himself; two sisters who obviously have some sibling issues bubbling up to the surface; lastly the younger twin brother and sister, with the brother eager to prove himself and stand on his own two feet while his sister seems to be more multi-talented every time we see her.

All in all, it can't but help that they're a good looking cast of characters and quite photogenic to boot. They're not trapped on an island after a three hour trip, nor are they LOST. Civilization is only a truck-ride away. Yet you will find yourself watching what they do and you'll probably find yourself wondering what you would do IF... Not a bad way to spend an hour on a Tuesday night.

    worst show I've seen

this show is the most annoying show I've watched in a long time. I very much enjoy the idea of doomsday prepping, and was looking for a show to watch and found this. I thought it was going to be real, but then realized its another phony type reality show. the people on this show are weak and highly unprepared...probably the first people to expire if there was going to be an end of world event. If a show wants to claim a name "Doomsday Castle" first they should have a castle that is a real castle, not just a cinder block wall, and then get rid of the "actors" that are on the show. The dad and some of the experts they bring on the show are in line with what I want to see in this type of show, but the rest of the people need to disappear. All in all I cant even finish watching the episode I just started and immediately came here to vent how this show is a waste. I just hope nobody thinks this is real "prepping" or that these people are actually capable of living in an end times scenario.

    Truly Awful

I realize one can't expect much from this genre of television, but this is taking "inexpensively produced" to a whole new level. These people are trying to build large structures and haven't even the most rudimentary carpentry skills. As a result, their "dramatic mishaps" are predictable and completely preventable. Because of that, the entire program feels heavily scripted.

But that's not why their mostly-male viewers tune in, is it ?

All the guns and ammo in the world won't help you when your 'castle' collapses under its own weight. And...a catapult ? Seriously ?

I understand the troglodytic fantasy of being self sufficient loners in the "end times" (lol) but history has shown us that, after a disaster, it's communities that band together that fare the best (Katrina, Thailand tsunami, etc). At least these clowns and their ilk will remove themselves from the population and leave the rest of us to get on with the business of reconstruction.

When I first watched this, I honestly thought it was intended as satire....but it seems that these clowns believe their own delusions.

    Huge Disappointment--Pathetic

I didn't have much hope for this show once I saw that pathetic excuse for a castle. But I did have hopes that it would be somewhat interesting and informative since I am interested in the prepping lifestyle.

My #1 peeve is Brent II (the eldest son). He is supposed to be 41 years old but acts like a jealous, whiney 11 year old complaining about his siblings and trying to prove himself to his dad. The rest of the kids are all very good looking and don't seem to really be into building this so-called castle. But I guess they are good for ratings since many of the people who watch this type of show are probably male.

I try to get into each episode but after a few minutes of constant complaining and girl-fights I change the channel. Prepper shows are good if the people seem real, down-to-earth, and serious about what they're doing. They don't have to argue, whine, fight with each other or be drop dead gorgeous.
