Apple TV+ has announced the premiere date for first installment of its upcoming animated adventure trilogy WondLa, hailing from Skydance Animation and based on the New York Times bestselling book series The Search for WondLa by Tony Diterlizzi.

Showrun and executive produced by Bobs Gannaway, the seven-episode first season of WondLa will premiere globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 28.

Anthony C. Ferrante, who used to write for Fangoria magazine back in the day, has directed twenty feature films over the course of his directing career – and several of those are shark thrillers. Ferrante was the director behind the over-the-top shark action of Sharknado, and when that movie turned out to be a pop culture sensation he returned to direct all five of the increasingly over-the-top sequels. When Jaws emerged in the summer of 1975, it created the shark horror genre as we know it today, spawning countless rip-offs in its wake. Some good. Some bad. Some just plain ugly.

The new Shudder documentary Sharksploitation is a must watch for lovers of this particular trend, and it dives deeper into the phenomenon to explain why we love these types of films.

Mike Fenton, the legendary casting director who worked on the “Back to the Future” franchise, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and scores of other classic movies and TV shows, has died. He was 85.

Fenton co-founded what is now known as Casting Society of America in 1982. In 2013, the Discovery Channel’s long-running documentary series “Shark Week” aired a show called “Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives.” The premise of this show is that Carcharocles megalodon, the largest predatory shark that ever lived, is actually not extinct—and that scientists and the government know that and are lying to you. It was completely fictional, featuring CGI video, photoshopped images, and actors claiming to be scientists, government officials, and family members of victims.

Many viewers believed it to be real, which was not surprising because it aired on non-fictional educational television and included only a brief, vaguely worded disclaimer at the end of the credits.

The 2017 slasher movie makes its VHS debut in a retro-style clamshell case with original artwork by Dark Horse Books artist Will Perkins. The release is officially licensed from Dark Sky Films and ArieScope Pictures, and it is been approved by writer-director Adam Green.

It looks the sharp-toothed winds of Sharknado are about to come to an end. Syfy has greenlit a sixth and final installment of the campy sci-fi horror franchise, Deadline has confirmed.

The yet-to-be-titled sequel will bring back Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, Cassie Scerbo, and Vivica A. Fox. Five-time Sharknado helmer Anthony C. Ferrante will be back in the director’s chair for the grand finale.

In Sharknado 5: Global Swarming, we last saw Finn (Ziering) walking the Earth all by his lonesome after it has been destroyed. The sixth movie will have him traveling back in time to stop the first Sharknado that ushered in this cult franchise.

The Sharknado movement started in 2013 and has since garnered a rabid cult fanbase on social media that ate up all of the franchise’s B-movie glory. The first movie was followed by Sharknado 2: The Second One, which was a series-best reeling in 3.9 million viewers.

The Syfy film franchise is set to wrap up, with the upcoming sixth film to serve as the franchise’s swan song. In true, ridiculous “Sharknado” fashion, the final film will see lead character Fin (Ian Ziering) travel back in time to save his family. There is a tornado full of sharks that, for whatever reason, seems hellbent on destroying our stocks of awkwardly self-parodying, Z-list nearly-celebrities. The only people who can stop them are two or three people who were relatively famous a quarter of a century ago. Throw in a lukewarm mugful of basement-bin, so-bad-it’s-bad irony and, bingo, that’s your Sharknado. And your Sharknado 2: The Second One. And your Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! I seriously can't believe that there is going to be fifth Sharknado film. SyFy and Asylum announced today that they've started shooting Sharknado 5, and Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will once again reprise their roles as shark-fighting experts Fin Shepard and April Wexler.

It amazes me that there's such a big following for this stupid-ass franchise, but people seem to enjoy the ridiculousness of it. I've personally just found it painful to watch. If you are a Sharknado fan, I've got an excerpt from the script for you along with a description of the story.

Yep, there's that wonderful writing fans have been waiting for. As for the synopsis, here's what was given in the press release:

Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are coming back to battle the sharp-teethed terrors from above in Sharknado 5. Syfy and The Asylum announced the start of filming in Bulgaria on the fifth installment of the franchise, which is once again directed by Anthony C. Ferrante and also features Cassie Scerbo joining Ziering and Reid to reprise her role as Nova.

Tentatively titled Sharknado 5, the new sequel will take place around the world, including the UK and Australia. We have more details in the official press release below, as well as an excerpt from the film’s script. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for more updates.

Press Release: New York, NY – February 2, 2017 – Syfy and The Asylum announced today that Ian Ziering and Tara Reid will again star in Sharknado 5 (working title), reprising their roles as shark-fighting heroes Fin Shepard and April Wexler. Principal photography commenced today, February 2, in Bulgaria.

Syfy’s Sharknado: The 4th Awakens hit land this Sunday night, and just as with the previous sequel, the forecast called for tireless, tiresome stormchasing (or being chased by storm), as Fin Shepard and family again weathered extremely fishy meteorological phenomena.

Because make no mistake, whereas the original Sharknado was an expectedly silly and serviceable Syfy lark, Sharknado 2: The Second One was downright clever in parts (as confirmed by a partial, second viewing I stumbled into this weekend) and actually had a semblance of a story.

“Sharknado” Cassie Scerbo gets the best/worst line of the first movie, and delivers it with the appropriate amount of overwrought emotion: “They took my grandfather, so I really hate sharks.” At the movie’s climax, Scerbo falls out of a helicopter while fighting off a shark — into the mouth of a different shark. You may have trouble believing this, but the “Sharknado” franchise isn’t above the age-old practice of reviving a once-dead character in a sequel. Or is it? Ahead of “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens,” SyFy has revealed the results of a social-media campaign based around a simple question: “Does #AprilLive or does #AprilDie?” The character in question is played by Tara Reid, a mainstay of the series since its first installment. The tongue-in-cheek made-for-tv series, which first caught on before it even aired thanks to the knowing absurdity of its title, has become a mainstay of so-bad-it’s-good viewing for many. “Sharknado 2: The Second One” aired in 2014, “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” in 2015.

Five years since the last Sharknado attack, the deadly flying sharks are back in “Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens” — and this time they’re invading Sin City. The first official trailer for the SyFy made-for-tv film has just arrived, and it’s even more ridiculous that we expected.

The story picks up five years after the third film when Fin (Ian Ziering) and his family thought they were safe from the man-eating sharks. Everything changes when the killers return with a vengeance, this time in Las Vegas. And one thing that’s for sure, “what happens in Vegas, sure as hell won’t stay there.”

That’s just what happened as SyFy announced that the mercurial actor and reality show regular will join the fourth incarnation of the Sharknado series. When SyFy commissioned the original Sharknado, they could never have expected the pop-culture phenomenon that it would become, a so-bad-it’s-good classic whose popularity saw the fast-tracking of a decidedly funnier and more self-aware sequel in last year’s Sharknado 2: The Second One.

Another year has passed and a third Sharknado film has now aired on SyFy, living up to the ironic thrills of the previous movies while also taking the action to even more ridiculous heights than fans surely expected.

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! may not be much in the scripting or acting departments, but it compensates for this with some gnarly gore, outrageous cameos, and an admirably go-for-broke attitude that you just don’t get on big-budget Hollywood tentpoles.
