In May 2009, after the College Movie Festival entry of Tran's horror short "COEXIST" (which won an Audience Choice award), the idea of the feature film "Obliquity: Imagery of the Unknown" was the next step into venturing for him as a college graduate. In making the project, the idea was to also unite as many people in the Greater Cincinnati Area and beyond to participate, which is why the soundtrack features 26 bands and artists.
Shooting began August 2009 but was put to hold until adjustments to the script were made. Shooting continued in spring 2010 and continued throughout summer 2011, but was then put to hold so he could co-produce and contribute to Sovereign Entertainment's feature "Devil's Point". Filming for "Obliquity" continued a majority in 2012 and then wrapped in February 2013. Promotional photography and interviews continued through the beginning of summer 2013.
The idea for the title "Obliquity: Imagery of the Unknown" came from a chapter title in Tran's first screenplay-turned-novel that he wrote when he was 12 years of age. In 2007, Tran and a team of people entered the 24-Hour Apple Insomniac's Film Festival and submitted the short story "Split"- which is the segment in Chaz's Obliquity. In 2008, "Duality" was made after teaming up with writer Nick Austin. They collaborated with the ideas of sleep deprivation and life experiences for those coming-of-age, which helped inspire the ideas written into this film.

Meriam-Webster states "deviation from moral rectitude or sound thinking". Also comes from the word 'oblique'.
