  • The Great Irish Famine in the mid-19th century was one of the most devastating events in Irish history. Between 1845 and 1852, potato blight hit the island's potato crop. The potato was a staple item of food in Ireland, so many years without a good harvest led to mass starvation, disease, and the deaths of nearly a million people and emigration of another million to different parts of the world. In Ireland the Great Famine and it is the most painfully sad story that most of the world not know about a tiny chapter of that history. When the Ottoman Empire heard of this disaster and offered Queen Victoria £10,000 to help the people of Ireland, Queen Victoria refused the offer of £10,000 but she said The Ottoman could donate only £1000 becouse as she had given £2000 herself. The Ottoman Empire did send the £1000 but in secret also sent over 5 ships of food to help the struggling country. during their hour of need, the great famine - the most devastating and traumatic period in Ireland's history.—Omer Sarikaya
