Heartwarming and heartbreaking

I shamelessly stole the title of this review from another user's comments on the episode because it really captures the essence of the show.

Ted Danson is excellent and brings his character to life, but all the surrounding cast deserves praise (I'm looking at you, McKinley!)

Please give the screenwriter some reams of paper, plenty of pens (or a really fast word processor) and lock him in a room somewhere without distractions so he can write as many shows like this as possible.

Some details of the script made me shed a tear and, well, I cannot remember the last time it happened.

As a series finale it was quite satisfying and it ties up all loose ends, and the hook for the next season is not a huge cliffhanger like some other series - even if I for one will watch Season 2 as soon as it comes out.

Trivia
The title of the episode is a reference to John Le Carré's novel with the same name, published in 1963. Charles seems to be a Le Carré enthusiast: in the first episode he is shown reading his novel "Smiley's People", published in 1979.

Goofs
Calbert says that his relationship with his son has improved and that he now "take[s] the BART sometimes to his office for lunch." During the bay cruise in {From Russian Hill with Love (#1.7)}, he points out Salesforce Tower and says it's where C.J. works.

But there is no practical way to incorporate a BART ride as part of a trip from the crest of Nob Hill to San Francisco's tallest building. His best public transit option for that journey is to catch the California Street cable car in front of Pacific View, ride it to Battery Street, and walk three blocks from there.
