Renowned Indian actor Dimple Kapadia (“Tenet”) is enjoying a blockbuster 2022-23 with everything she touches turning to gold.
Kapadia had a pivotal role in Disney’s 2022 mythological superhero film “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” In 2023, the actor had meaty roles in two of the year’s biggest Bollywood hits, “Pathaan” and “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.” And, taking a leaf from the Helen Mirren playbook, Kapadia took an action-heavy headline role in streamer Disney+ Hotstar’s patriarchy shattering drama series “Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo,” which released in May.
The series revolves around four women, the matriarch Savitri (Kapadia), her daughters-in-law and her daughter, who live in a forgotten village in the northwest of India. Savitri runs the Rani Cooperative, trading in products ranging from balms to textiles. But everything here isn’t what it seems – the cottage business is a front for the biggest drug cartel in South Asia.

Mumbai, April 21 (Ians) ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’ director Homi Adajania spoke about his show and choosing the saas-bahu genre, which, for him, was new. However, he has given his own twist to the web series and tried to make it look fresh and different from usual dramas.
Homi said: “I have known of their popularity, but never been familiar with the saas-bahu genre, though I guess that’s where the name ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’ came from. For me, it was always a story about the women in a very unique family running a drug cartel without the men in the family even knowing about it.”

"Kabir thought of me for the film. It's a small but special role. I feel like the role of a spouse and family is not always given enough credit when you look at athletes and when they perform and win on international platforms. I feel their families don't get recognised as much as they deserve to. So, keeping that in mind, I wanted to do the film," said Deepika, while interacting with the media at the red carpet of Iifa Awards 2019 on Wednesday in Mumbai.

This year has been a great one for National Award-winning make-up, hair and prosthetic designer Preetisheel Singh. She started the year with the blockbuster success of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, where she created the looks for Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The film received rave reviews, and the media went ga-ga especially over Ranveer’s look of the evil ruler Alauddin Khilji.
And just as the dust had settled over this controversial epic drama, came the touching and endearing looks of Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, which Preetisheel curated for Umesh Shukla’s runaway hit 102 Not Out.
But it was this month that the makeover wiz had her hattrick clincher with Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk; a gripping take on Muslim patriotism in a Hindu-majority India. The film has not only made an indelible mark at the box-office, but has managed to effectively send out a...

National award-winning make-up and prosthetics artiste Preetisheel Singh, who is working on Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s looks in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-awaited period drama Padmavati, says she is trying to do something different with the looks in the film.
“Padmavati is set during the 12th century, and we don’t have paintings from that era from where we can take references,” she said in an interview to Scroll.in. So Preetisheel has gone ahead and photoshoped ideas before putting them into practice. She says, though it is an imaginative and time-consuming process, it’s not very difficult for her as she always tries to make the actor don a look that he or she hasn’t had before.
Now anyone who knows even a little bit about Preetisheel would agree to that. After all, she has made a lot of heads turn with her work...

His writing evoked such brilliant imagery that it was a joy for me as a filmmaker to sink my teeth into it when converting it into a screenplay,” says Homi, who after sketching out the story to him, would narrate a scene and Kersi would send it back to him as a chapter.

The shocking crash of Shaandaar has left the entire team of the film stunned and reeling under the impact.
Apparently, the most badly hit is Shahid Kapoor, who after the critical success of Haider (contrary to fudged figures the film was not a commercial profit-earner), was hoping to consolidate his shaky box office status with Shaandaar.
Shahid Kapoor is apparently very upset with the way the film has turned out.
"He was never convinced about the script. He did the film for producer Madhu Mantena. The two are close friends. And he agreed to do the film in spite of the flimsy storyline for Madhu's sake. But now Shahid is fuming. Because Shaandaar has not only failed to deliver the much-needed box office success to his career, it has also brought down the reputation of his father Pankaj Kapoor," says a source in the know.

25 films old and Deepika Padukone is at the top of her game. A key factor in her success has been her father's positive influence. A world class badminton champion Prakash Paukone won the All England Championship in 1980, and in 1982 was awarded the Padma Sri by the Indian government, in recognition of his contribution to sport.
While his pride in witnessing his daughter's journey from model to becoming one of India's leading actresses on a path to global stardom, is evident, it's also obvious how proud she is of him. The actress famously broke down when she was presented a special achievement award at the Indian of the Year awards, by her father. She dedicated the prize to her parents, thanking them for allowing her "to live [her] dream".
She now stars in Piku, the Shoojit Sircar-directed movie which explores the dynamics of a modern Bengali girl and her complex relationship with her ageing father.

Writer Charla Manohar and Warsha Narain from Total Mind Media decided to put all the great moments together. Enjoy The Best of Bollywood 2014 in 01:42 minutes.

She is known for giving us some of the finest performances by any star in recent years—from Cocktail to Ram Leela, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to Race 2 , Finding Fanny to Happy New Year, Deepika Padukone is set to take her acting prowess a notch higher with Shoojit Sircar’s family comedy drama Piku.
Apart from the fact that the film is a casting coup—since it brings Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan and Deepika Padukone together for the first time, Piku is also Deepika’s first stand alone title role since her debut in Om Shanti Om. In this quirky father-daughter tale, Deepika plays a modern Bengali girl alongside Amitabh Bachchan who plays her father.
Currently India’s top actress, Deepika has always experimented with films, a fact that is evident from the diverse range of roles she has played in the past. It is this desire to seek...

The celebrated filmmaker and cartoonist Walt Disney once said, “Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” Whatever background or class you belong to, we all love to relish in a Bollywood film now and again. It transports us in to a world we wish we were a part of, as well as exposing us to characters who we can relate to. So has 2014 been a good year for Bollywood? Well let’s just say there were a minority of good films that form part of a pile of disappointments. It’s not been an amazing year for the Hindi film industry, yet we feel that the films which have lived up to our expectations deserve its due recognition. So without further ado, here are the films that have made the final cut!

Directors, they are the driving force behind the movies. They take the words on the page and bring them to life on screen. They guide the actors, they work with the crew, they create the shots, they create the sound and the songs with the music directors and so much more. Every year there are some directors whose work truly stands out and we like to shine the spotlight on them. So, it’s not strictly a top ten and we have not put them in numerical order as such. Plus there are a few surprise horses, but here are the directors the BollySpice team thought shone through brightest in 2014 and a few personal reasons for why – enjoy!

As reflections of Indian cinema in 2014 do their rounds, there are some very common conclusions everyone has come to that are undeniable. And that it was not the greatest year for actors but quite a year full of feats for our ladies. Indian cinema has come a long way in terms of credible roles and films for our leading ladies. Whilst we are still flooded with the kind of cinema that provide the leading actress with nothing more than a page of dialogues (if that) and 4 songs, we do get the occasional Sridevi in English Vinglish or a Vidya Balan in Kahaani. 2014 gave us more of these rare moments than we bargained for. No doubt we are still hungry for more from our ladies, however we choose to not stop and lament about what we lack but instead reflect on the brilliant year the ladies of Indian cinema have had.

Although this year’s most memorable performances were delivered by women, there are many actors that deserve being recognised for the good job they’ve done in the year 2014. Here is BollySpice’s list of the top 10 actors who wowed us with their performances!
10. Varun Dawan (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Main Tera Hero)

With his loveable portrayal of the boy who has to overcome numerous obstacles to win his beloved’s heart, the actor also won many hearts among the audience with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. As audiences mature and develop an attention for detail for cinema, the demands from our stylists increases. When Deepika Padukone sported denim skirts on cold snowy mountains in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the average viewer to the well versed critique pointed it out. So naturally, our makers have realised the importance of proper styling. 2014 was an impressive year for costumes in cinema. Stylists showed great panache in adhering to script demands. 2014 was particularly impressive because we had numerous films in which the styling contained a lot of subtext about the characters.
BollySpice now presents to you costumes in 2014 that stood out for us. These stylists are applauded for their efforts in making our stars look the part because afterall when you can convincingly look the part, a portion of your job onscreen is already done.

2014 was a fantastic year for music in Indian Cinema. We saw a definite shift from formularistic numbers to more nuanced tunes in step with the respective screenplays they would be featured alongside. Music directors were bold and brave, breaching familiarity and conventions to taking risks and we could not be more mesmerised by the results. Hamlet was adapted to a gritty and raw musical by Vishal Bhardwaj. Ankit Tiwari and Mithoon basically defied gravity by re-creating the magic of Aashiqui 2 with Ek Villian. Read on as Bollyspice closely chronicles 2014’s top 10 music directors.
10. Jeet Gangulay
Jeet Gangulay’s Citylights was the silent hit of 2014 with Arjit Singh’s Mukurane becoming a crowd favourite from the get-go followed closely by Mohd. Irfan’s unplugged version of the song. While Youngistan did not do well at the box office, Gangulay’s ‘Sangemarmar’ definitely left a mark. Similarly, ‘Sun Le Zara’ from Singham was equally effective.

Three weeks after Pk, finally a big Bollywood film would be arriving in the form of Tevar. Amongst all the relative newcomers who have arrived in last four-five years, Arjun Kapoor had the most successful 2014, what with 2 States, Gunday and Finding Fanny resulting in around 200 crore coming in. On the other hand, Sonakshi Sinha too had a hit in Holiday and a decent grosser in Action Jackson. Both youngsters have a good fan following and that should further help Tevar, which is aiming at a pan-India audience with something for multiplexes as well as single screen audience.
Moreover, with Manoj Bajpayee in there, the film gains further credibility. The makers (Eros, Sanjay Kapoor) have made the film on a lavish scale and the promotion has been quite strong as well. Also, the release size of the film is good too and all of this means that even a 40%-50% start...

Dolly Ki Doli follows hot on the heels of the success of Khoobsurat. In light of Sonam Kapoor delivering one of her most charming performances to date in the Disney rom-com, it is hard not to have reasonable expectations from Dolly Ki Doli. Furthermore, it is an interesting venture from Arbaaz Khan Productions, whose prior releases were the testosterone-filled Dabangg franchise.
Dolly Ki Doli, directorial debut of Abhishek Dogra, also stars Rajkumar Rao (Shahid, Kai Po Che and Queen), Pulkit Samrat (Fukrey) and Varun Sharma (Fukrey) in pivotal roles. The duo of Sajid-Wajid, unsurprisingly, have been engaged to deliver the film’s soundtrack with featured vocal artists consisting of Sunidhi Chauhan (‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ – Tees Maar Khan), Mamta Sharma (‘Munni Badnaam’ – Dabangg), Rahet Fateh Ali Khan (‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain’ – Dabangg) and Divya Kumar (‘Shake Your Bootiya’ – Finding Fanny).

2014 certainly was a year of highs for Arjun Kapoor with three releases (2 States, Gunday, and Finding Fanny) and each performance garnering great reviews, especially for his work in the super hit 2 States. The young actor is starting off 2015 with a bang as well with the release of Tevar. Co-starring Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee, the romantic action thriller, directed by Amit Sharma, hits the big screen on January 9th.
The film tells the story of Pintu Shukla, a local Kabaddi champion from Agra who is a regular boy next-door type of guy but when he finds himself in the middle of a lethal fight for love he never backs down. There is a local Bahubali from Mathura, Gajender Singh, who has a penchant for sharp knives and instant death. Then of course there is a pretty girl, Radhika Mishra, who hails from the same city and just wants to escape from Gajender’s domain.

2014 gave many gems to adore like Queen, Finding Fanny and Haider, but for every good film there’s a Humshakals, It’s Entertainment and Action Jackson. With every editorial on the new changes in Bollywood, there’s the inexplicable popularity of duds that have Ajay Devgn loudly zipping up his trousers or Saif running around London like a dog. It’s baffling that films like Bang Bang or Kick work, but the modest failure of Humshakals had us filled with glee, maybe next year the audiences will finally give up on Sajid Khan. This year’s Razzies features some repeat offenders (looking at you Jackky!) and some newbies who should know better.

2014 has truly been a year of surprises. The audiences surprised the film makers by accepting movies that perhaps 5 years ago they wouldn’t have, film makers surprised the audiences by challenging the norms of Indian cinema and taking risks with their story telling and above all, actors surprised everyone by delivering performances that we wouldn’t have pegged them to deliver. Bollyspice now brings you a list of Stand Out Performances of 2014. Not all of these performances were lead performances in their individual films but they were performances that stood out of the entire film for us.
Alia Bhatt – Highway
In a recent interview Alia Bhatt confessed that after Student of the Year she was rather disappointed because no one was simply talking about her! Comments were restricted to ‘fresh’ and ‘pleasant’ and never remotely even referring to her actual performance. So she decided in 2014 she would ensure we talk about her and only her.

It’s a given that critics and the box office don’t always agree; one critic’s rubbish is another theatergoer’s paisa vaisool.
2014 proved that with most of the year’s top grossers receiving lukewarm reviews from critics at best.
Salman Khan’s Eid release Kick was the year’s top grosser in India with 231 crore. According to review aggregating site Weird Angles, Kick got an average score of 5.5 from critics on a scale of 10. Saibal Chatterjee from Ndtv gave the movie 2 out of 5 and said “it provides a kick only sporadically,” while Sarita Tanvar from DNA gave the movie 4 stars and called it “a non-stop entertainment and Salman Khan at his best. Deepika Padukone is currently working on her next film Piku with Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan.
After learning Tamil for Chennai Express and a Maharashtrian accent for Happy New Year, Deepika will now learn Bengali for Piku. The actress did workshops with director Shoojit Sircar and also took help from Moushami Chatterjee.
Deepika said, “I’ve played a Tamilian in Chennai Express, a Gujarati in Ram Leela, Maharashtrian in Happy New Year, a Goan in Finding Fanny…and now a Bengali in Piku. Bengali is a soft and lovely language. It’s always fun to learn a new language and a different learning experience.”

Shiamak is known as the Guru of Dance, and has choreographed some of the best dance pieces for stage and screen. To celebrate the choreographer’s birthday, we thought we would shine the light on his work in films! He truly has an eye for creating incredible creativity with his choreography on screen and we know you will enjoy watching every one.
‘Dhoom Again’ – Dhoom 2
The huge success of Dhoom 2 helped to solidify Hrithik Roshan’s career and no doubt his remarkable dance performance in the opening song ‘Dhoom Again’ showed him at his finest. Shiamak was of course responsible for the jaw-dropping choreography that can be seen throughout the song. It’s bold, edgy and something which we have never really seen in Bollywood before. Kudos to Shiamak on giving the song a big ‘dhoom!’
