Given how quickly Marvel aborted their own little animated sub-universe that was proposed and then pulled before half of it was even made, I'd assumed that the first season of "Hit-Monkey" would be all she wrote on the subject. However, this second season arrived somewhat unexpectedly - for me anyway - on Disney Plus. Whilst I certainly didn't dislike the first season, I'm not sure that I really thought that highly of it, but this second run is markedly better.
Monkey (Fred Tatasciore) and Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) head to New York, where Monkey joins the Assassins agency, ran by Eunice Jones (Leslie Jones) whom Bryce worked for before his death. Bryce is offered a deal by Mephisto (Keith David) in that he will be allowed a few more hours of physical form, if Monkey continues to provide souls for him. Bryce wants this time to reconnect with his estranged daughter Iris (Cristin Milioti). Akiko (Olivia Munn) still reeling from Monkey killing her father, tracks him using the unearthly help of Lady Bullseye (Reiko Aylesworth).
What I particularly liked about this second season is that it kept all the positives of the first run and fixed the issues I had. It still looks good; the animation style is really nice and the vocal work is strong - with a cadre of new characters including ones voices by Stephanie Beatriz, Tramell Tillman and Rob Corddry.
It's a better story though, with the Japanese political plot replaced by a genuine threat to the world, in the form of a series of all powerful weapons that need to be taken from their evil owners, with the twist being that one is the sword currently in the possession of Monkey's friend Haruka.
I suspect from the conclusion that this is the actual end for "Hit-Monkey" though to be fair I thought that last time, however, if they get the chance to roll the dice again, I'd certainly be back for a third run.
