The project was originally announced in January 2014, with screenwriter Sophia Al-Maria attached as the director and starring May Calamawy. The project fell apart and Al-Maria turned it into an art exhibition in September 2014, and in the same year she published a novel, 'Virgin with a Memory', partially based off of Beretta. In April 2024, it was announced that Palestinian director Maysaloun Hamoud would direct the film.
