Hosting this thing is not easy, and I think Colin Jost is doing a fantastic job.
Is it perfect - no, but what is perfect? For me it's the perfect thing when I just need to turn my brain off for 15 minutes from the badness and madness that is happening around me. And I don't underestimate the value of that.
It takes an episode or two for them to really hit their stride, and it also took me an episode or two to get used to it. But once I was, I fell in love.
The second quarterfinal show was so amazing that I was buzzing afterwards.
I really hope they keep making these - I think it could become as popular for streaming as regular Jeopardy. My friends are obsessed with it and we tell everyone we can to watch it. I think if they keep making episodes, it will find its audience.
Check it out if you just want some marshmallow in your life.
Also. Legitimately. There have been some ridiculous comebacks. One's you can't help but cheer for while going, "Oh noooo! What!!? What?!" Just good. Wonderful content.
As I've now read some of the negative reviews, allow me to add some extra bits: Pop Culture is a vast category. Pop Culture trivia games at bars regularly have teams, this is just an extension of that niche. It does not but mean there aren't still people who know plenty of historical facts. Further still, if one thinks Colin is 'over-the-top', then I'd like to suggest watching game shows from either Japan or Mexico to receive better context for what 'over-the-top' actually entails.
1) The host is LAME, he has the charisma of a comatose patient.
2) The team format is stupid, feels like the show can't decide if it wants to be Jeopardy or Family Feud. And just like Family Feud, most of the contestants are unlikeable. So it's difficult to root for anyone.
3) Most of the trivia (and the overall feel of the show) is catered to a Gen Z audience. I could easily see this version of Jeopardy being added to the already horrendous programming on MTV or E!
To put it simply. After suffering through five episodes, I had enough. As a big fan of trivia, I'd rather play Trivial Pursuit by myself, than sit through another episode of this drek.
Put that in your Daily Double.
The gameplay is similar to its parent show: Jeopardy round, Double Jeopardy and Final Jeopardy, respectively; but in tournament mode, playing by points rather than money amounts. But in addition to having 1 Daily Double in the first round and 2 in the second round, both rounds have one Triple Play, which gives teams a chance to triple the value of the clue if every member of their team gets the 3 responses right.
As for Colin Jost, he is the perfect host for this spinoff imo, keeping the game moving while also throwing jokes of his own during the game as well. Ever since he joined Saturday Night Live as the anchor for Weekend Update, I've been a loyal fan of him and Michael Che as well, so I can't wait to see what surprises that PCJ has in store for us! The theme song for the pop culture spinoff is also wonderful as well, taking it back to the 80s and having a remanence sounding of the Rock & Roll spinoff, thanks to the wonderfully talented group of Bleeding Fingers Music!
To end it off, I wish PCJ nothing but the best and I highly recommend it to Jeopardy and/or pop culture fans!
P. S., if there's ever a pop culture spinoff of Wheel of Fortune planned, do get Michael Che as host as it'll make an amazing crossover with the 2 shows!
Pop Culture Jeopardy is the perfect Jeopardy show I would be watching on Prime Video!
I remember watching the first few episodes one month ago, and I know every pop culture topic from movies / TV / gaming / music / celebrities / etc.
I really hope Pop Culture Jeopardy gets renewed for multiple seasons because this one is a must-watch Jeopardy show for pop culture buffs alike!
When I was in Westfield High School, I was in a class entitled Pop Culture Class for 12th grade (senior year) and I knew I would be a pop culture buff.
Highly recommend this show!
