The back story given by Mrs Blankenship about the haunted house the Prescott family move into is based on the real life case of Mudhouse Mansion. Mudhouse is located in Fairfield County, Ohio, United States, just east of the city of Lancaster. It is said to have been built in the 1870s. Incidents that allegedly occurred at the property include those mentioned in the film - the murder of a slave owner's family and a mass suicide by a family who later moved into the Mansion. Mudhouse Mansion has not been occupied since the 1930s and to this day is abandoned and remains closed to the public.

Update: Mudhouse Mansion, which was in fact occupied as recently as the 1960s, was demolished on September 21, 2015. All that remains are the stories. Despite local legend, no murders or suicides were ever confirmed to have occurred there.

Shot on location at Dewi Villa in Aberaeron, Mid Wales, with additional exterior shooting in the Dunvant, Uplands and Upper Killay areas of Swansea, South Wales.

The character of Mrs Blankenship is an homage to a character of the same name in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995).

The character of Hans Voltz is loosely based on Hans Holzer, an American paranormal researcher and author. He wrote well over 100 books on supernatural and occult subjects for the popular market as well as several plays, musicals, films, and documentaries, and hosted a television show, "Ghost Hunter". One of his most famous cases occurred at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville and later formed the basis for the Amityville Horror series of books and films. The Hans Voltz character is mentioned in the film as having been involved in the Amityville case.

The back story for Otto the Clown Doll was based on the real life case of Robert the Doll. A picture of the real life Robert is featured in the opening credit sequence. The producer of this film would later go on to make a feature film about Robert the Doll.
