Dropout Stands Up
Dropout as a streaming service is best known for its game-themed improv comedy (particularly Game Changer and Make Some Noise), but Dropout Presents is its flagship program for standup sets.
The series was finding its footing in the first season, and seemed to have not wholly settled on its premise or editing style. Some sets were improv sets (Bigger!, From Ally to Zacky, and the Big Team), some were straightforward standup sets (Pissing Out Cancer, Unmedicated) and some were "edited" standup sets (Chris Grace as Scarlett Johansson, Four Pills) where there's are occasional 'breaks' from the live standup for pre-recorded sequences (I personally liked these, although I do also like the naturalness of the more straightforward sets too).
The fun of this overall was the variety, although this also meant that there were some hits and some misses. My personal favorite was the lead straightforward set by Hank Green. My least favorite set was "The Big Team," not because of the performers but because of the edit. (To be clear, most of the Dropout Presents series is very well edited, which makes me think that one episode had some on-the-floor recording issues.)
Now that season 2 is coming out, I am overall looking forward to this more than a lot of Dropout's other material because (I think I'd go Game Changer, Make Some Noise, Dropout Presents as my top three favorite Dropout Programs), I still think it'll be some great variety, although the trailer does suggest it will veer slightly more into more conventional standup sets rather than quite the full range of improv types as Season 1. That's okay to me, and probably a natural progression, although without the season actually being out I can't say that's how it will be for sure.
If you're already a Dropout Subscriber, and basically are like, "Should I bother with these?" I would say the answer is yes.
If you're not a Dropout Subscriber, then I would say that with the delightful range of back catalog content in Game Changer and Make Some Noise, although Dropout Presents is ~slightly~ more similar to the type of content you might see on Comedy Central, it's still a delightful new offering that is definitely worth subbing over.
