Shogakukan’s AI Translated Manga & Light Novel App Gets Launched In The US, Canada
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (2024)
Shogakukan has officially launched its AI translated manga and light novel app, Novelous, in the United States and Canada on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Est.

Shogakukan has partnered with AI translation startup Mantra, in which they invested 780 million yen (US$5.1 million) along with three other manga publishers in June last year.

According to the publisher, many light novels have low circulation numbers, making translation and overseas expansion difficult in terms of profitability.

However, by using AI, they aim to translate many works at a low cost, which they say will also serve as a countermeasure against piracy.

In an interview with Nikkei, Shogakukan had said that human translators will meticulously organize details such as the characteristics of characters, the background, and the context – before AI translation process begins.

Titles

At its inception, Novelous boasts over 80 titles including Too Many Losing Heroines!, and Kengan Ashura. Notably, the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End...

5 Anime Characters Who Dominated Anime in 2024 (And 5 Others You Overlooked)
Image
2024 was another great year for anime. It was filled with original stories, great set pieces, and plenty of interesting characters. Some characters got the limelight they deserved, taking center stage during 2024. Other characters were incredible but didn't get the attention they deserved, doing very well within their respective series but being overshadowed by big shows. Some of the most popular characters were obviously going to be big from the beginning, like Goku's resurgence in Dragon Ball Daima.

Other characters took the world by storm out of nowhere, like one of the best elves in anime Frieren from the legendary Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. While some characters got the screen time they deserved, others sat back and became largely underrated, giving people who didn't initially watch their shows a great reason to tune back in and see some of the best from 2024.

Overlooked: Kazuhiko Nukumizu and Anna Yanami Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!

MyAnimeList Crowns Most Popular Anime of 2024 in New Top 10 Rankings
Image
A-1 Pictures' popular Solo Leveling picks up a rather nice accolade before Season 2 premieres this January as MyAnimeList data crowns it 2024's most popular anime.

The popular anime database and tracker MyAnimeList revealed its most popular anime of 2024. MyAnimeList allows users to add a series to their account to indicate their current watch progress -- while these can include members who plan to watch the series but have not yet, this is generally negligible and can be discarded. Unsurprisingly, Solo Leveling Season 1 was the most popular anime of 2024, leading Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc in second by a massive 246k member lead. It led Dandadan in third by 271k. The top 10 list can be seen below.

Sorry, Too Many Losing Heroines Fans, But You Won't Like the Inspiration Behind the Hit Anime
Image
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! was the breakout anime romcom of 2024, and it’s easy to see why. In addition to having such great visuals and animation that Makeine received praise from legendary director Makoto Shinkai, the premise of giving closure to girls who lose typical love stories made for an engaging take on anime romcoms, and the strong writing of every episode perfectly sold that from start to finish.

Makeine is a truly phenomenal anime, which makes its inspiration all the more surprising. After the series won first place in the 2025 edition of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!, an annual guidebook highlighting Japan’s most popular light novels, series author Takibi Amamori was interviewed about the process behind its creation, and as it turns out, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! was inspired by a highly controversial anime from Studio Trigger. Makeine fans probably won’t like that, but at the very least,...

Summer 2024's Biggest Romance Anime Was Inspired by the Most Controversial From 2018
Image
One of the best anime rom-coms of the Summer 2024 season was inspired by an infamous mecha anime that caused an explosive shipping war in 2018. Takarajimasha published its 2025 edition of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel Is Amazing!) guidebook, which revealed more about this source of inspiration.

Via Anime News Network, Too Many Losing Heroines! dominated the rankings for Bunkobon (a small-format paperback book), Illustrator, and Male Character popularity poll. Staying true to her gimmick, Anna Yanami hilariously ranked #2 in the Female Character rankings -- for which the series official X account (formerly Twitter) celebrated the runner-up position as a characteristic of a real "losing heroine." However, the 2025 issue also revealed the divisive inspiration for Anna that led to the original creation of Too Many Losing Heroines!.

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (2024)
Too Many Losing Heroines! Was Inspired By Darling In The Franxx Anime, Reveals Author Takibi Amamori
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! (2024)
In the latest Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2025 Edition, author Takibi Amamori shared the creative inspiration behind Too Many Losing Heroines! light novel series.

Amamori detailed how the concept of focusing on losing heroines was born from observing the love triangle in Darling in the Franxx anime.

Amamori cited Ichigo, the blue-haired heroine from Darling in the Franxx, as the catalyst for the novel’s concept.

“She’s the protagonist’s childhood friend, a representative figure, and has a crabby yet endearing personality with a petite stature. She had all the elements of a losing heroine,” Amamori stated. “And sure enough, she lost to the main heroine in the story.”

The idea for the light novel took shape while the author pondered a different outcome for childhood friend archetypes, where they ultimately win the protagonist’s heart.

However, this realization posed a new dilemma. “If the childhood friend wins, another...

Every Main Character in Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!, Explained
Image
This article contains spoilers for Maikeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! anime, streaming on Crunchyroll.

Illustrated and written by Takibi Amamori, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! is a breakthrough romance anime of 2024. After its successful summer run, the series has garnered a considerable following, especially because of the way the rom-com elements were handled. Amidst a sea of trope-filled high school love stories, Makeine comes in as a breath of fresh air, highlighting the perspective of the rejects.

Most of the time, the male protagonist is on the losing side of the relationship, but Makeine turns the table by putting the spotlight on the heroines. The series deals with rejection and self-discovery in a whimsical manner without asserting too much seriousness. Comedy is the shows defining element, but the winners are definitely the characters. Although they may seem like a culmination of shojo archetypes, when looked at closely, the Makeine cast will surprise the fans.
