"Check Engine" is a short film written by Kevin Moriarity and Jesus Ortiz that highlights specific challenges and stigmas men face in mental illness. The story follows the main character, Joey, after the tragic and unexpected loss of his best friend, Ben, in a motorcycle accident. Joey is struggling with conflicting emotions. He is depressed, angry, guilty, and feeling responsible for the loss of his friend. Despite these emotions, he feels he must remain strong, not appearing vulnerable to his friends and family. The weight of his grieving has become too much for him to bear on his own, he now only sees one option to end his suffering.
