Summaries

  • A former boxing champion now works as a bus driver and struggles to reckon with his violent past while the man he once beat into a coma wakes 30 years later to confront him, throwing his retirement plans into jeopardy.
  • The film opens in 1988 during a high-stakes boxing match in Las Vegas between Scott "The Savage" Simpson and Sancho "Jailbird" Sanchez. Scott, famed for his anger issues, struggles initially due to Sancho's speed and agility, but in a surprising turn, Scott wins the match and sets the record for the most consecutive victories in the sport. However, in response to a whispered insult from Sancho, Scott attacks him after the match has ended, sending Sancho into a coma. Scott is consequently banned from professional boxing and sentenced to prison. The film fast-forwards to a future where Scott is a worn-out bus driver living a solitary life. He interacts with various passengers and coworkers, highlighting his transition from renowned boxing champion to a world- weary bus driver. A passenger recognizes Scott and hopes to persuade him to become his boxing coach, but Scott firmly refuses, demonstrating his desire to leave his past behind. Scott's life is thrown into further turmoil when Sancho wakes up from his coma, with Nurse Renuka informing him of his past and the reason for his condition. Simultaneously, Scott faces multiple conflicts with passengers, escalating when he attempts to kill a rat on the bus and causes an accident, jeopardizing his job. The situation complicates further when jimmy, a figure from his boxing past, reveals that Sancho is awake and wishes to see Scott. Under pressure, Scott agrees to visit Sancho. The meeting ends abruptly when Sancho attacks Scott, while Jimmy films the whole scene. Scott's life spirals out of control further when his romantic interest, Layla, discovers his past as a boxer after an awkward encounter with Sancho. Despite Scott's efforts to keep his emotions in check, he violently attacks Sancho during a court hearing for a restraining order, thus affirming his violent past. His actions come at the cost of his peaceful retirement and an end to his complicated relationship with Layla. The film concludes with Sancho back in a coma in the hospital being taken care of by his nurse. Scott, now in an orange jumpsuit, is on a prison bus looking defeated and reflecting on his actions, while Layla drives off to New Mexico, leaving her past behind. The final scenes depict the cyclical conflict cycle between Scott and Sancho, highlighting their inability to escape their share history.—Chris Vinan and Nahuel Viales
