    Early Recklessness

Alright... I'm a little torn, to be honest. On the one hand, I'm enjoying seeing young Dexter figure things out, but that kill in the Jai Alai place? It felt a bit much, right? Like, his second kill and he's doing it in a pretty open space with all the lights on? I know Harry's whole thing is "don't get caught," and that seemed like a really risky move for someone who's supposedly just starting out.

Maybe they're trying to show he's reckless at this stage, but it kinda threw me. It just didn't feel as thought-out as you'd expect, even from a newbie Dexter. It made me wonder if we're going to see him actually learn and get better at this, or if he's just going to be pulling off these kind of crazy kills from the start.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still invested in the show and the backstory stuff is cool. But that particular scene just felt a little unrealistic and unlike what I'd imagined early Dexter would be like. Hopefully, we'll see him get a bit more strategic as the show goes on.

    It's all coming together

Wow, this was probably my favorite episode of this series so far. I'd put it above some of the episodes in even the original Dexter series, just because it was so full of interesting and important events. My one critique, which has actually been the same for all three episodes so far, is that the first half of the episodes always feels rushed. But other than that, this was a fantastic episode.

My biggest takeaway from this episode was that I actually care about young Dexter and Deb now, which is something that I wasn't sure would happen in this series. Given that it's new actors playing the characters, I wasn't sure if I was going to feel connected to them or be able to actually seem them as the real Dexter and Deb. But by episode 3 I am fully on board. I am rooting for them, and I want them to both do well.

The next thing that I noticed is that we have our second villain of the series emerge, and quickly meet his end. This was something that they did in the original series that made it really enjoyable to watch. There would always be one "big bad" villain for the total season, and then smaller villains that would last for one or two episodes. Here we get our second villain after Nurse Mary. And it's really awesome to see Dexter develop as a killer. Also we get some of our first looks at who the big bad villain will be for the season, and I'm very excited to see how things play out. The writing is starting to find its grove I feel.

I really like that they put out episode 2 and 3 on the same day this week because after watching ep2 I really wanted to see what happened next. It felt like we were right in the middle of the action. Now at the end of episode 3 it feels like a natural stopping point to wait until next week. I'm still very eager to see what happens next, but I'm not going to have to get all back into a plot that was almost to the crescendo like I would've if it was going to take a week for episode 3.

Overall I'm just really impressed with this 3rd episode and I'm very happy with how the series as a whole is going. I'm so glad this isn't just filler, "new Dexter" content. They're not just milking the name and franchise. This is a quality show that gives some real details about the history of Dexter and all the characters and really enriches the original show. I can't wait to see more!

    Mistakes Abound

Ok, in the first episode you had some stuff that didn't exist back when this was supposedly taking place, but I let it go because it was just a small fluke, this time I'm not letting it go. In this episode there are not 1 but 2 scenes where someone is fist bumping, the ONLY people who would know that back then are people who are into sports, which has been shown repeatedly to not be the case with Dexter. So every time you make a scene where Dexter is fist bumping someone, what you're doing is sticking a gesture in that people from right now would recognize, but from back then would never have done. Please for the love of god, fix that.

    Best episode yet? Maybe

So far this season has been building in the best ways. I'm loving the character development for Harry, and seeing what Miami Metro was like with him on the team. Debra is VERY much in character, and it's interesting seeing a high school version of what she would've been like. I noticed a lot of people pointing out the Harry flashbacks as inconsistent with the show being in Dexter's head/memory. I think it is fitting, as if the whole show was only from the POV from Dexter, there would be alot of story missing. People seem to just be looking into it to much. The original show was narrated by Dexter but still broke away to other scenes he was not in. Overall another good episode! The kill was awesome. Very Dexter. Also.... Introducing Laguerta! Great! I love how Spencer referred to her as a "Climber". He was spot on. Another great episode that reminds us why we fell in love with the show in the first place!

Dexter in its most total core.

This third episode contains all the aspects that characterized the original series, Dexter's way of acting, his way of investigating and approaching criminals, his relationships with his family that develop progressively. In the meantime we continue to follow the flashbacks on Harry and Laura Moser, before the latter's death, having a more complete perspective on the beginning of their relationship, and what they did together for a certain period of time. An excellent episode from all points of view, and I think that at this point the series will only get better, this spin-off is so far a real surprise and a breath of fresh air.

Dexter makes some "knockoff" cocaine for Debra's party by grinding up caffeine and benzocaine tablets. Benzocaine is a synthetic, amino ester-class local anesthetic, typically used as a topical anesthetic, it is in the same class of drug as anesthetics like novocaine and lidocaine; benzocaine is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter anesthetic ointments, such as products for oral ulcers, or ear drops for ear aches. Cocaine is also a ester-class anesthetic, while also possessing narcotic properties, it has been used in medicine for hundreds of years to numb skin prior to surgery, especially in the mouth, nose and eyes, it's sometimes still used in modern medicine for this purpose because it also has strong blood clotting factors and helps control bleeding during mouth, throat and nose surgery. Novocaine, in the form of procaine, was actually synthesized from cocaine (hence the similar name), after chemists experimented with ways to create a local anesthetic drug without cocaine's narcotic effects.

Synthetic anesthetics like benzocaine don't produce a narcotic effect and can't get you high, although snorting it would numb the inside of the nose the way cocaine does. The increased heart rate and heightened energy levels of snorting powdered caffeine, combined with the placebo effect, might mimic some of the effects of cocaine enough to trick teenagers who've never actually used cocaine, although it wouldn't fool someone who has used cocaine before.

When Dex gets a counterfeit driver's license from Masuka, it has a magnetic strip on the backside. Florida did not add magnetic strips to its licenses until 2017.
