Detective shows are ten a penny. Watch enough of them and they blend into one.
A reason why the likes of Sherlock and Jonathan Creek stick out. Going by the first episode Ludwig might well be joining them.
John Taylor (David Mitchell) is the fastidious, shy, introverted puzzle setter. When his twin brother James Taylor, a cop disappears. James wife Lucy approaches her brother in law with a proposition.
Just get inside the Cambridge police station and retrieve her husband's notebook. It could help solve James's disappearance.
Reluctantly John agrees but when he goes inside the station. He gets drag into investigating a murder. Suddenly John's synaptics awaken, there is a crime/puzzle to solve.
Ludwig is a lighthearted easy going comedy drama. Look at it more closely, there are levels of puzzle and clues permeating around it.

With such a good cast I was expecting great things of this series but having just watched episode one I've decided to draw stumps. I feel that David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell- Martin have been rather mis-cast in their roles and any hope that their usual comedic talents would make this series something special were soon dispelled for me I'm afraid.
The storyline is pretty weak and implausible and any attempts at humour fell pretty flat. The series Vexed was far more engaging and had a decent plot and managed to incorporate light relief much better.
I hate giving up on this so early but can see the writing on the wall.

Everything David Mitchell touches is magic, but something about this show goes even further! I cannot tell you the last time I was so invested in a pilot immediately. The way the jokes are played, the writing, the pacing... everything is just SO good.
Beyond that, the story has a great and unique premise, which I have never seen before. Additionally, there are sherlockian elements that will draw in unfamiliar viewers, who will stay for a puzzle maker with a knack for solving crimes!
I am beyond excited to see where the show goes from here and am grateful to be experiencing a show with clever writers!

Intelligent, humorous, intriguing. Great dialogue, beautifully understated. Some lines made me laugh out loud. Clever writing, beautifully acted. Finished episode one and IMMEDIATELY had to watch the second. It's so good we're not going to binge watch the series, to make it last longer. Plus it's got wonderful variations of hidden tunes from Beethoven. And it's got Felicity Kendall. What more do you want?
Spoiler alert: no car chases, no explosions, no effing & blinding, no drugs, nobody being gratuitously aggressive or confrontational. If that's the sort of thing you like you won't find it here - try Netflix.

This should have been good with a top actress and a comedy star but it just doesn't quite hit the mark.
Maybe it will take time for the characters to bed in but it isn't there yet.
Yes there are some good funny lines but why does it have to be set in Cambridge?
The UK version of Professor T is set there (OK, in reality, much of that show is filmed in Belgium) so surely a different backdrop could gave been found.
David Mitchell is good and Anna Maxwell Martin is most different from the character I saw her most recently play I Until I Kill You but there is just something that is slightly off with the murder being solved but it takes a confession to explain why.
Stick with it as theed is an ongoing theme.

- TriviaIn keeping with the theme of Beethoven, the composer whose given name is the title of the programme, the underlying background music is a reworking of Beethoven's 7th symphony 2nd movement allegretto.
- GoofsThe black and white wedding photo with Lucy, James, and John, Lucy's face is clearly edited into the photo, the edge of her face is fuzzy, when all other edges in the photo are sharp, and the angle of her face compared to the rest of her head do not match properly like her face has been imposed into the image.
