The Waiting Game is a powerful documentary that explores the untold story of the ABA/NBA merger, revealing a battle for justice as former ABA players seek the benefits they were promised but never received. With thrilling sports action and iconic moments, the film goes beyond the court, exposing the corporate greed that stood in the way of these athletes' rights. It's a gripping narrative of perseverance and resilience, urging viewers to reflect on the intersection of sport, justice, and human dignity. The film is a tribute to those who stood firm, fighting not just for themselves but for future generations of players.
"The Waiting Game" is a fascinating true story about a small Indiana not-for-profit that took on the powerful NBA on behalf of former ABA players. The film provides the history of the ABA and shows how the league's players helped to make NBA basketball the exciting game it is today. Yet many of those same ABA players were later left out in the cold with no health insurance, no pension, and no recognition by the NBA. Due to a cleverly worded "merger" agreement drafted by NBA lawyers, ABA players who thought they would be provided for discovered the NBA had no legal obligation to them. The film provides a gripping account of the financial and health struggles faced by many former ABA players. But it also provides a powerful lesson of what can happen when a dedicated group of people care enough to fight for justice for those who can't fight for themselves.
Well done documentary film. I found this film quite fascinating and eye opening about former ABA players fight for justice and recognition. I plan to continue to follow this story and spread the word in an effort to help these players get the benefits they are entitled. The film is a must watch for any basketball fan. It's a nostalgic journey through the history of ABA/NBA and how "the ball was dropped" with respect to the former ABA players not picked up by the NBA.
I had the pleasure to watch this film screening at The Heartland Film Festival and it was an honor to listen to the panel of those involved with the film and players.

The Waiting Game is a compelling film that tells the history of professional basketball in our country and the facts surrounding the ABA/NBA "merger." It is filled with great sports action, famous figures and fashion. Even more importantly, it is a story about treating people with dignity in spite of corporate greed and subterfuge. Compassion, perseverance, cooperation and using your own special skill set to help others are featured themes. I believe it is the best film entered in the Heartland Film Festival in 2024. There is something for all family members and your eyes will be open in ways that you never imagined.
