Smart Comedy!
Loved this unique and fun satire that stands out with its clever writing and sharp delivery. James Sunshine has done a fantastic job both with the story and his distinctive directing style. The acting is spot-on across the board, with Sierra McCormick giving a particularly memorable performance. The film strikes a perfect balance-light in tone without ever feeling campy or forced. The pacing keeps things moving briskly, and the story unfolds with plenty of quirky twists and unexpected turns that keep you engaged throughout. It's refreshing, smart, and consistently entertaining. A really great watch!
IFS Best Picture Winner
This movie won Best Picture, best director, and best actor at the LA Independent Filmmakers Showcase and with good reason. It has a unique blend of dark humor, irreverent twists, and bloody action. Killing Mary Sue is low budget but doesn't take itself so seriously which totally works. The action is satisfying and quick editing keeps you entertained. The movie delivers on its unique concept which our main character is a mary-sue trope turned on its head, and great performances especially Sierra McCormick. Dermot Mulroney and Jake Busey together are a great combo and the whole host of oddball hitmen trying to take down Mary sue are a lot of fun to watch.
A Cliched Caricature
James Sunshine's "Killing Mary Sue" attempts a satirical deconstruction of a well-worn trope but ultimately becomes the very thing it seeks to parody. The film, which follows a group of writers who try to kill off their all-powerful, flawless main character, suffers from a severe lack of narrative focus, meandering between meta-commentary and a generic action plot without truly committing to either. The result is a lukewarm and ultimately unmemorable cinematic experience that delivers neither genuine laughs nor compelling thrills.
The supposed "clever" interactions between the characters feel forced and contrived, lacking the genuine spark necessary to engage the audience. The dialogue, often laden with clichéd pronouncements about storytelling and character arcs, feels painfully artificial, as if the writers simply strung together a series of pop culture references without any regard for natural conversation. The film's self-awareness feels less like wit and more like a crutch, failing to mask its underdeveloped plot and thin characters.
Is it worth watching? No. It's a film that promises a clever critique but delivers a clumsy and uninspired caricature.

Dark (humor) Sunshine
What a wild ride! Lol! This movie was creative storytelling + fantastic acting + great niche references ("Stop sweeping my leg!") + dark humor + a couple of hilarious punny names.
Bravo to all involved, in particular Sierra McCormick who killed it (literally and figuratively), Dermot Mulroney who captured the annoyed and aggrieved politician so poetically in this era, and James Sunshine, writer / editor / director. Although the tone of the film does not match his name, it was certainly a BRIGHT and well executed story!!
There is quite a bit of violence (as the name might suggest! Haha!), but my distaste for that is on me, not the film! The humor FAR outweighed the body count! Well done!!!

One of the worst movie I've endured in 2025
If you read the 10/10 reviews for this movie here you'll notice that most of them were written within a 2-week stretch of each other and that many of them use the same phrases in their titles and descriptions. I'm guessing the filmmakers asked all their friends and family at once to submit reviews for the movie.
My wife and I decided to watch this mostly on the basis of the well known actors in the cast. If we had paid more attention, we would have realized that most of these actors are decades past their prime years and were probably on board the movie to collect an easy paycheque.
This movie is absolute s**t. It's a much more boring version of Becky which itself was only moderately entertaining. The main character grates on your nerves. The rest of the cast indulge in a lot of overacting.
My wife and I have a high tolerance for mediocrity, but even we gave up on it with forty minutes left to go.
