Hiccups
A film fueled by passion. Passion for cinema, passion for how cinema can tell love stories. Maybe Joel would say passion for rom-coms-but this is a rom-com in the same way Annie Hall is.
Which is to say, it is... but also, not quite.
It's a super rom-com.
An incredibly enjoyable film overall... except I hate the painting the protagonist makes. It's awful. And it doesn't feel like something he would make. I can't explain why, it just doesn't fit. But whatever, that's not the point.
Also, Joel has a fantastic cameo here-he plays a terrible boyfriend, and he plays him so well. And his character? A guy who's published a book with 1,000 love poems (better than Petrarch, no?).
And when discussing it with his now-ex, they both agree-1,000 is probably too many.
Then he tells her he's working on a new one.
Titled Another 1,000 Poems.
Feels like a nod to the whole 12 films in 12 months thing-because, honestly, if he had made even just four fewer... hell, even just a round number, two fewer... maybe the extra time would've gone into this already brilliant, fantastic film.
Hiccups-highly recommended.
