The film is based on a true event. In 2005, 21-year-old Kabelo Thibedi's patience ran out at the Johannesburg Department of Home Affairs when his ID was not ready after months of delays. Kabelo held a government official hostage with a toy gun for five hours and demanded that his ID be flown in by chopper from Pretoria., His demand was met not long before his arrest.
"Andre Metsrepie" was Morne du Toit's 2nd student film to be broadcast on local pay channel mNET. The film won three awards at the mNET EDIT awards on May 9th 2008 in Johannesburg; best lead actor, best director and best film.
