The original plan was for the cast and crew to go on a real road trip together, from Oklahoma to Maine, and film scenes at several stopping points along the way, which would capture a gradual change in the look of the movie. Although the crew actually did drive from Oklahoma to Maine, the low budget and strict time constraints forced them to abandon the idea of filming along the way, though they were able to stop in New York City. Oklahoma City and the surrounding area wound up doubling for cities like St Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh, though some crew were later able to film individual scenes in Vermont and Ohio.
