Borrelli stepped down late Wednesday, just days after Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli personally escorted law enforcement officials into the ministry’s offices to seize documents related to the case. The scandal centers on Stelle della Notte, a feature film project that received €863,595 (circa $1 million) in production tax credits in 2020 through a program overseen by Borrelli’s department. Despite the funding, the film was never made.

Nicola Borrelli, head of the film department of Italy’s culture ministry, has stepped down in the wake of a mounting scandal involving a roughly $1 million dollar production tax credit granted for a film that never got made, allegedly partly produced by a U.S. citizen who stands accused of a double murder.

Borrelli is well-respected in Italian cinema circles and has led the film department for many years. He stepped down late on Wednesday after Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli last week personally escorted Italian police inside the film department’s offices to seize documents pertaining to the scandal.

The tax credit scandal erupted last month when it emerged that the film department led by Borrelli had granted and paid out a €863,595 ($1 million) tax credit for a feature film set in Rome titled “Stelle della Notte” that never got made.

The lead producer on this fake project is a 46-year-old U.

Per intel sent by the producers Thursday in Cannes, the second and “final phase” of filming will start in Rome in June, and the filmmakers are eyeing a fall debut. Maserati: The Brothers chronicles the rise of the Maserati family and their legacy in the world of automotive innovation.

Pacino will portray businessman Vincenzo Vaccaro, a champion of Maserati family and an early investor in the auto dynasty. In the biopic, produced by Andrea Iervolino, Pacino and newly cast actors Gina La Piana and Tatiana Luter join previously announced cast of Anthony Hopkins, Andy Garcia, Jessica Alba, Michele Morrone and Salvatore Esposito.

Nicki Cortese and Wayne Marc Godfrey of Bright White Light are co-financing and executive producing the project.

In a statement, Iervolin said the team is “thrilled” to have Pacino join the cast.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the previously announced production stars Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, and Nashi, seen recently in Chinese blockbuster Creation of the Gods 2 which grossed $385 millions worldwide.

Walters Media Group has secured the film rights to The Third Parent, the well-known creepypasta story by Elias Witherow. The adaptation will be the feature debut of producer David Michaels, who will both write and direct the film.

Set during a 4th of July celebration, the story follows Tommy Taffy, a menacing figure who disguises himself as human to infiltrate a suburban neighborhood. Once inside, he imposes an authoritarian rule over an unsuspecting family, turning their world into a nightmare.

“I am thrilled to develop Elias Witherow’s popular horror IP into an intense, scary movie experience,” said producer Gary Michael Walters. “Tommy Taffy has the potential to be the next iconic horror villain, and David Michaels has an incredible vision to bring this property to life.”

Bobby Moresco, an Oscar-winning screenwriter, will bring the incredible story of Bugatti’s founder to the big screen in a new biographical film. The project, simply dubbed “Bugatti,” will follow the life of the brilliant automotive pioneer who altered vehicle design in the early twentieth century.

Moresco, who earned an Academy Award for co-writing “Crash,” will collaborate on the screenplay alongside Amanda Moresco and Soraya Azzabi. The film is set to begin filming in late 2025, with locales spanning Italy and France.

Producer Andrea Iervolino expressed enthusiasm for the project, saying, “We aim to explore the life of another visionary in the automotive world, delivering an exciting and faithful narrative that celebrates Italy’s automotive tradition.”
