Not an opera and far better than you might expect

I usually avoid anything suggesting opera but The Eyes of the World: From D-Day to VE Day on PBS is really good, both the singing and visuals. Overdue respect is paid to all levels of the five service branches, the parts played by women and (using the terminology of the time) Negro Battalions. The trials of four journalists are featured throughout; Elizabeth Lee Miller, Robert Capa, Ernest Hemingway, and a fellow named Jerry later known by his initials, J. D. Several great-offspring of Normandy veterans are recognized but a particular Higgins Boat driver, Eddie Albert, goes unmentioned.

Female news correspondents were amongst thousands of women who served as aircraft builders and ferriers as well as in the medical corps. Three of the 850 all black all female officers and enlisted of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, for example, are not specifically noted in the performance but are interred at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. The all black 761st Tank Battalion is noted for it's December 1944-January 1945 operations. An army runs on its supplies and most American supplies were handled by black regiments even though they were barred from eating the rations they delivered.

I couldn't watch the part about the camps though, never able. A link to a public domain photo by Lee Miller taken the day of the Kaufering I liberation featured on the show has been disallowed by IMDB. Some may recognize a number of musical pieces like Kahal & Fain's I'll Be Seeing You. The American History Unbound site lists the music but, I seem to think, misses Khachaturian's Gayane Ballet Suite.
