This Excellent Psychological Thriller Is Now Streaming — If You Think You Can Stomach It
Image
If you know me, then you know one of my favorite films is Lucky McKee’s May. I’m a fan of uncomfortable cinema, because I think that, just as it’s vital to have those movies that we can relax with and escape into, it’s also important for art to make us uncomfortable. To challenge us. To ask us to feel someone else’s pain and recognize that we are not alone in our own.

These are movies that make you squirm. Sweat. And sometimes, test your stomach, all a part of the method to the madness on the path to revelation. This year’s The Ugly Stepsister is a recent example that made some waves. One you may not be aware of is a little gem titled Swallow, and it’s now available to stream on Shudder.

What’s Swallow about? Per Shudder:

A newly pregnant...

Seth Rogen Stars in A Great Show for AppleTV+. It’s Called ‘Platonic’
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers from Season One of Platonic.

Seth Rogen has brought us so much that selecting the single best production he’s been involved with is probably impossible. He’s produced The Boys, Black Monday and Blockers. He’s acted in Long Shot, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Freaks & Geeks. He’s hosted The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down And, in whatever spare time he has left over, created his own pottery. At the moment, he’s being feted for The Studio — and rightly so, given the 23 Emmy nominations it racked up for its freshman season. I liked The Studio and don’t begrudge it the accolades it’s receiving. But this time next year, we better be seeing the same kind of attention for Rogen’s other AppleTV+ sitcom: The Studio is good, but Platonic is better.

Platonic, which premiered in 2023 and then lay fallow for a year,...

‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Review: An Intriguing but Sluggish Postscript for the Count’s Nemesis
Image
Plenty of horror movies have shifted the focus from vampires to vampire hunters, imagining an underground network of stake-drivers combatting the elusive breed of bloodsuckers. Sometimes the two sides overlap, as in the “Blade” films. “Abraham’s Boys” has the gist of an original angle that goes straight to the primary source of modern vampire mythologies.

Here, the protagonist is Dutch undead expert Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who’d been called to England to fight a supernatural nemesis in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” That polymath, famously played by everyone from Peter Cushing, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins to Willem Dafoe (in last year’s “Nosferatu”), is now a recluse in the New World, hiding out from spectral pursuers 18 years after he’d helped orchestrate the Count’s extinction.

The twist is that fear of reprisal has turned this learned man into a paranoid tyrant, holding his family hostage in joyless...

Why Did Bruce Springsteen Hide So Many Albums in His Vault?
Image
What if Bruce Springsteen had followed up his synth-and-drum-machine-driven 1994 hit “Streets of Philadelphia” with a whole album largely in that vein? What if he’d dropped an album of Great American Songbook-style ballads instead of 2017’s Western Stars? Springsteen’s just-released boxed set Tracks II: The Lost Albums is packed with seven albums’ worth of alternate realities and musical surprises, offering a reminder of just how much he’s capable of outside of his stadium-shaking work with the E Street Band.

Netflix is teaming up with Bert Kreischer for a brand-new scripted comedy series, and if you know Kreischer, you know things are about to get wild! Viewers can most likely expect laughs, chaos, and probably a few moments that'll make you squirm (in the best way). Below, we shared all there is to know about this upcoming Netflix show.

Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogul join him as co-creators, while also serving as showrunners, writers, and directors for the project. Bert Kreischer to Topline Netflix Sitcom
Image
Bert Kreischer has made five stand-up specials for Netflix, and now he’s taking the time-honored path trod by many comedians: starring in a sitcom.

Kreischer will play the title role in and is a co-creator of Free Bert, a six-episode comedy the streamer has ordered. Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (The Grinder, Huge in France) co-created the show with Kreischer and will serve as showrunners, writers and directors. The cast also includes Arden Myrin, Lilou Lang and Ava Ryan.

In Free Bert, Kreischer will play a version of himself — a “shirtless comedian, party legend, perpetual wildcard,” as the show’s logline puts it. He finds himself in unfamiliar territory when his daughters (Lang and Ryan) are accepted at an elite private school in Beverly Hills. When his antics turn the family into outcasts, he decides to put a shirt on and stifle his true self in order to fit in.

Bert Kreischer Comedy Series Ordered By Netflix; Arden Myrin & Ava Ryan Co-Star
Image
Netflix has been slowly evolving into what broadcast networks have stood for — offering a broad spectrum of entertainment for everyone. After adding procedurals to its portfolio of original offerings, the global streamer also has been taking a page from the broadcast comedy playbook by building series around stand-ups and their lives and material.

Following Shane Gillis’ Tires, Michelle Buteau’s Survival of the Thickest and Leanne Morgan’s upcoming Leanne, Netflix has greenlighted Free Bert, a six-episode scripted comedy series starring, co-created and executive produced by Bert Kreischer, who has done six stand-up specials for the streamer.

Fellow actor-comedian Arden Myrin (The Righteous Gemstones) also stars in the series along with newcomers Ava Ryan — who has a big social media footprint with 3.3M followers — and Lilou Lang. Free Bert is co-created and executive produced by Kreischer as well as Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, who serve as writers,...

How Charli xcx Helped ‘Overcompensating’ Music Supervisors Secure Britney Spears and Lady Gaga Song
Image
Charli Xcx doesn’t just play herself on Prime Video’s “Overcompensating,” as the show’s executive producer and music producer on the show, she was deeply involved in working behind the scenes in helping the music flow throughout the eight-part series.

Speaking at a guild FYC, music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg discussed how the “Boom Clap” singer made their job easier, but also how her involvement helped artists license their music.

Weisberg said, “We went into embracing ourselves for challenges ahead. But she was really involved. She was on spotting sessions, she was part of the composing team, and she was giving edit notes on where the score should come in and where it should come out.”

Created by Benito Skinner, “Overcompensating” Benny (Skinner), a closeted jock as he explores his freshman year at college. While the script packs hilarious punches, the music serves as a character.

General Hospital Moments to Watch June 16-20
Image
It’s been a big time for parents and children on General Hospital. Here are three major moments to watch out for this week in Port Charles.

Big News?

Mid-week, Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) will receive big news, which could be about several things. Could the news relate to Curtis’ (Donnell Turner) search for Drew’s (Cameron Mathison) prostitute and Portia’s (Brook Kerr) involvement? Or maybe they’ll get an update on Kai’s upcoming documentary. The biggest news they could receive would be that Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) is alive and well, though Chavez’s upcoming stage gig makes us think that’s not the case.

Read This: Is Ric (Rick Hearst) the real winner in Lucky’s (Jonathan Jackson) sudden departure from Gh?

An Offer He Can’t Refuse

Speaking of Curtis, on Tuesday, he’s said to make Michael (Rory Gibson) an offer.

‘Gh’ Spoilers Monday, June 16: Equitable Solutions, Explosive Confrontations, Secrets Uncovered
Image
General Hospital spoilers and updates for Monday, June 16 tease equitable solutions, mission promises, and a time out!

Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) offers equitable solutions, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) makes mission promises, and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) puts two grown men detectives in time out!

Equitable Solutions

Martin talks to Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) and offers equitable solutions-it sounds like he’s talking about her and Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) who he had spoken to earlier.

He tells an interested looking Tracy there is a way they could both win. Tracy seems interested to hear his idea, whether she’ll go for it, remains to be seen.

But there is value in offering compromise if no one is compromised in the process. At least the two of them aren’t at each other’s throats like they usually are!

Interview: Joe Hill and Natasha Kermani on ‘Abraham’s Boys’
Image
In Abraham’s Boys, the horrors of the past are inherited rather than slain. A thoughtful and quietly unnerving adaptation of Joe Hill’s acclaimed short story, the upcoming feature explores what happens when the myths of Bram Stoker’s Dracula meet the emotional reality of a family trying to live with its legacy.

Set long after Van Helsing’s infamous battles, the film centres on Max and Rudy, two boys raised under the strict, watchful eye of their father, Abraham. They know him only as a paranoid and controlling parent. They don’t understand his rules, his fears, or the quiet desperation he carries. But when they begin to uncover the truth behind his history – and the identity of the monster he once hunted – they’re forced to confront a terrifying reality they were never meant to know.

“I think they can expect to be scared,” says Joe Hill, whose...

‘Abraham’s Boys’: Shudder Unveils Trailer for Joe Hill’s Chilling Van Helsing Story
Image
Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for Abraham’s Boys, a new horror film based on the excellent short story by Joe Hill, one of my favorite horror authors. Set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, this one promises to offer a bold new take on the Dracula mythos through the eyes of Van Helsing’s traumatized children. Should be wild.

Directed by Dread alumni Natasha Kermani, Abraham’s Boys stars Titus Welliver as Abraham Van Helsing, a man haunted by his past encounters with the Prince of Darkness. The cast also features horror icon Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil), Aurora Perrineau (Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare), Judah Mackey (The Morning Show), and Brady Hepner (The Black Phone).

The story here is focused on Max and Rudy Van Helsing, two brothers raised in isolation under the paranoid and authoritarian eye of their father. Unaware of the monstrous history Abraham is trying to keep buried,...

Abraham’s Boys trailer: Natasha Kermani’s Joe Hill adaptation reaches theatres in July
Image
Four years ago, we heard that Tea Shop Productions, the company behind 47 Meters Down, had hired Imitation Girl and Lucky director Natasha Kermani to write and direct a feature adaptation of Joe Hill‘s short story Abraham’s Boys. Two months ago, we finally got an update on the project when it was announced that Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service had acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the film. They’re planning to bring it to theatres (under the title Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story) on July 11th, and with that date right around the corner, a trailer has dropped online. You can watch it in the embed above.

The Abraham in question here is vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing as Hill’s action-horror story is described as a “follow-up of sorts” to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The story tests the relationships Stoker formed in his original novel.

Abraham’s Boys: Natasha Kermani’s Joe Hill adaptation rated R for bloody violence
Victor Polster in Girl (2018)
Four years ago, we heard that Tea Shop Productions, the company behind 47 Meters Down, had hired Imitation Girl and Lucky director Natasha Kermani to write and direct a feature adaptation of Joe Hill‘s short story Abraham’s Boys. Two months ago, we finally got an update on the project when it was announced that Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service had acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the film. Now the movie is making its way toward release, and it just took an important step on that path: it got its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Abraham’s Boys has officially been rated R for bloody violence and grisly images.

The Abraham in question here is vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing as Hill’s action-horror story is described as a “follow-up of sorts” to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The story tests the relationships Stoker formed in his original novel.

Now, Lucky is on a mission to expose Ava Jerome (Maura West) and Ric Lansing’s (Rick Hearst) extortion plot against Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), fueled by their knowledge of Kristina Corinthos Davis (Kate Mansi) cutting Ric’s brake lines, which caused their near-fatal accident.

‘Lucky Lu’ Review: An Authentically Downbeat New York Story About a Chinese Migrant Struggling to Welcome His Family
Image
The “Lucky” which precedes the lead character’s name in writer-director Lloyd Lee Choi’s debut drama is obviously meant to be ironic: For nearly the entire movie, Lu may be the unluckiest guy in New York. And yet, this authentic and downbeat immigrant drama questions what luck means in a ruthless, dog-eat-dog city where only the strongest survive. Does it mean making it rich and buying a penthouse in Tribeca? Or does it mean being surrounded by loved ones, wherever you live?

Clearly inspired by the Italian neorealist classic Bicycle Thieves, Lucky Lu follows a Chinese migrant (played by the excellent Chang Chen, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) whose delivery bike does indeed get stolen towards the start of the film. But the plot then diverges from Vittorio De Sica’s masterpiece in more ways than one, becoming less of a race-against-the clock scenario than a pointed study of both a character and a place.

Kirsten Storms Addresses Maxie’s Questionable Past On General Hospital
Image
Kirsten Storms looked back at Maxie Jones’ time in Port Charles. The General Hospital star is celebrating her 20th anniversary as the iconic character. Storms spoke out about Maxie’s complicated past, including her relationship history.

Controversial Relationship

In an interview with Swooon, Storms joked about Maxie’s dating history. She noticed one thing about her exes: “So many of them are dead. Maxie is black widow-ish,” Storms joked. One relationship in particular jumped out at her: Maxie romanced Lucky Spencer (Greg Vaughan), whom the actress had known since she was a teenager.

Storms joined the soap when she was 21 years old. Her onscreen persona was in a relationship with Jesse Beaudry (Matt Marraccini). After he passed away, she developed a crush on Lucky. “It was weird. I’ve known Greg since I was like 14 or 15, and to me, back then, he was a grown-up,” Storms admitted.

Next: How Kirsten...

How Benito Skinner Brought the Best of TikTok to ‘Overcompensating’: ‘This Cast Kind of Goes Crazy’
Image
Despite the Britney Spears music cue to start the show, it’s not luck that landed Benito Skinner — aka Benny Drama — his very own Prime Video comedy series. Still, the “Overcompensating” creator, star and executive producer feels very lucky to have assembled such an all-star cast, all of whom shined on the yellow carpet at the Palladium Theater premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

“I just approached it by picking whoever was perfect for the role. If you make me laugh on my phone, I want you in it, I want friends in it, comedians I’m obsessed with who haven’t gotten their platform to shine, just people I love so much. Whether they’re from the Internet or not, let’s put the funniest people in this,” he told TheWrap. “Whatever I did, I’ll do it again. This is insane, I’m so lucky.”
