Up until World War II, the young bank clerk Jutta Graae lives a happy life. But when Hitler starts a world war, a new, secret life begins for Jutta. Her brother-in-law, the war correspondent Ebbe Munck, asks her to be a contact for English agents, and when Nazi Germany occupies Denmark, she is invited to join a small group of intelligence agents who will fight the occupying power. Her code name becomes 'The Grand Duchess'.

Hitler has occupied Denmark, and Jutta Graae becomes involved in the fledgling resistance that has begun among a small group of Danes, including Jutta's brother-in-law, Ebbe Munck, and officers in the intelligence service. Their goal is to send espionage about the Germans to England and show that the Danes want to fight the Nazis. Jutta is soon entrusted with a series of secret missions by her friend, the intelligence officer Volmer Gyth, but one small mistake could cost them all dearly if they are exposed.

In 1943, the situation for Jutta Graae and the intelligence service becomes acute. Hitler has had enough of resistance and sabotage in Denmark, and the Germans take over power in Denmark. Being a resistance woman becomes much more dangerous, and when the Gestapo intercepts a shipment with information about Hitler's secret weapons, which Jutta has helped to send, the entire group is put in danger. To her great despair, Jutta Graae flees and has to leave her family and everything she knows.

After a dangerous escape across the Øresund, Jutta Graae has arrived in Sweden. The intelligence work is in ruins, and she is nervous about whether the escape has brought her family into the German spotlight. At the same time, she experiences a budding love affair with the intelligence chief Ejnar Nordentoft. But she chooses to travel on to London, where she is given the opportunity to join the English sabotage unit SOE. Here she becomes involved in the British bombing raid against the Nazis in Copenhagen with fatal consequences.
