This animated short film is a modern adaptation of the Korean classic tale Shim Chung. In this version, a girl named Shim Chung turns to organ smugglers in a desperate attempt to save her father's eyesight-but soon finds herself in trouble.
It's a dark and unsettling story, and I'm not entirely sure how closely it follows the original, especially when it comes to the ending. It feels like the film doesn't conclude nearly as hopefully as the classic version, though some of that may come down to the film's vagueness and room for interpretation.
The animation is well done, but something about the story didn't quite resonate with me. Perhaps it's the overall bleak tone-it's certainly more grounded in harsh realism. Then again, even Grimm's fairy tales are considered too dark by today's standards, so maybe this simply follows in that tradition.
