As Facebook continues to move away from employing actual fact checkers, and instead relying on community notes by users, John Oliver created an ad detailing the social media platform’s new strategy: “f–k it.” And he got some help from Cecily Strong, Ronny Chieng and more.
The main story of Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight” focused on content moderation on social media — or rather, the increasing lack thereof — mostly taking aim at Facebook, and laying the blame squarely at the feet of founder Mark Zuckerberg.
“Trump threatened Mark Zuckerberg with life in prison, then Zuckerberg turned around, gave him money, hired one of his buddies and changed the direction his company was going,” Oliver said. “It does not take a genius to draw a conclusion there.”

HBO has reversed its decision to delay the posting of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver clips on YouTube until Thursdays, TVLine has learned. Next-day clips will be back in action all season long, starting with Sunday’s Season 12 premiere, which hit YouTube Monday at 3 am Et.
The decision made in February 2024 was aimed at boosting viewership on the cabler’s sibling streamer Max. “When Last Week Tonight with John Oliver premiered on HBO, the convenience of watching on Max did not exist, so YouTube allowed flexible viewing for the main story as well as promotional exposure,” an HBO spokesperson said at the time.

HBO has brought back its tradition of posting “Last Week Tonight” clips on YouTube the day after their premiere following an outcry from host John Oliver.
Despite previously delaying posting clips from Sunday editions of “Last Week Tonight” from Mondays to Thursdays to encourage viewing on Max, HBO has appeared to reverse their decision and go back to the Monday posting schedule just in time for the show’s new season.

Aside from the peculiar appearance of a certain flightless waterfowl, Saturday night’s WGA Awards were a familiar affair.
“Hacks” won its second trophy in four years for Best Comedy Series, as well as its second trophy in the same span for Best Episodic Comedy, continuing a victory parade that began at the 2024 Emmys when it upset “The Bear” for the top prize. That hot streak has continued into 2025 with wins at the Casting Society of America, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, Producers Guild Awards, and AFI Awards, among others. With Season 4 having wrapped production in January, creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky’s Max original should enter the 2025 Emmy season as the presumptive favorite.
The season’s dominant drama, “Shōgun,” won’t be back in time to compete in 2025 — the writers’ room is still plugging away at Season 2 — but its Season 1 winning streak also...

Awards-watchers are accustomed to waiting for the end of every awards show to see the big film categories handed out, but Saturday’s Writers Guild Awards threw everybody for a loop by making the film awards the first two categories of the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
“Nickel Boys” won the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Anora” won the second, for Best Original Screenplay. The awards led off the shows because the BAFTA Awards are taking place in London on Sunday, with the categories’ early placement giving “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” writer Sean Baker more time to get to London.
In the television categories that ended the show, “Shōgun” and “Hacks” continued the roll they’ve been on since last September’s Emmy Awards, with the former show winning three awards and the latter show winning two.

“Shōgun” was the night’s big winner, picking up prizes for best drama, best new series and best drama episode. On the comedy side, “Hacks” also scored a double play, landing best comedy and best comedy episode. In the limited field, “The Penguin” scored the series win.
Meanwhile, it was the first WGA noms and wins for Baker, Ross and Barnes.

“I was at the gun range and I saw somebody get bad service — at the gun range! How you going to be rude to somebody who showed up to practice murder?” Wood Jr. said in the teaser that dropped on Tuesday.
“We ain’t going to make it,” he declared at one point, as the former Daily Show correspondent, now hosting CNN’s Have I Got News for You, also poked fun at the loss of human connection in today’s digital-centric society. “The only time you see an employee at the grocery store is when you do self-checkout wrong: ‘What you done to the machine? We largely have HBO to thank for all the incredible, genuinely profound work we enjoy in the television medium today. Founded in 1972 as a premium destination for movies and major events, it is now synonymous with its indelible contributions to the art of serialized storytelling -- and we've gathered and ranked several of the network's best shows ever.
Take note that this list doesn't represent the entirety of the network's greatest achievements. We made the difficult decision to omit talk shows and news programs ("Last Week Tonight with John Oliver"), documentaries ("The Jinx"), Max Originals ("Peacemaker"), and those series that lean a little too far toward reality ("How To with John Wilson). What remained were 20 of the greatest stories ever told, together defining in large part the standard we expect from television in the 21st century.

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” has been pulled from Critics Choice Awards consideration as a talk show following a recent change in eligibility rules, TheWrap has learned.
The organization’s TV nominating committee changed the rule so that only shows that “involve conversation” can be nominated for Best Talk Series going forward. The move followed the TV Academy’s 2023 decision to split its Best Variety Talk Series category into Best Talk Series and Best Scripted Variety Series.
Notably, the HBO program had won Best Talk Series at the CCAs at each of the last four ceremonies. Now, Best Talk Series will include shows like “The Daily Show,” while Best Scripted Variety Series includes shows such as “Saturday Night Live.”
The changes at Cca are not an exact mirror of those at the TV Academy. Cca changed the eligibility rules for talk shows, but did not create a new category...

As Donald Trump prepares to enter the White House again in January, he’s currently figuring out who his second-term cabinet will include. And, looking at the list of possibilities on Sunday night, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver wasn’t impressed.
Referring to a chart drawn up by CNN, which showed at least three people in the running for multiple positions, Oliver opted to “state the obvious” before actually digging in on each of the possible contenders.
“That chart f–king sucks,” Oliver said. “It looks like a ‘choose your fighter’ screen where the only thing they’re fighting is the arc of the moral universe. It looks like an advent calendar where every circle opens up to a tiny piece of literal s–t. It looks like a game board for ‘Guess Who? Oops! All Assholes.’ There is a lot in there.”
The host then zeroed in on Elon Musk and Rfk Jr.

Streaming service Max offers content from HBO, Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros Pictures and other Warner Bros Discovery-owned brands.
Sling TV customers have access to HBO’s multiplex of channels once again after the Echostar-owned streaming service announced a deal to offer Max to its subscribers.
Starting this week, Sling TV customers can purchase the ad-free version of Max for $17 per month, unlocking access to hit shows and movies like “Game of Thrones,” “Succession,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “Friends,” “Hacks,” “The Penguin,” “The Big Bang Theory” and more.
The $17 per month that Sling TV charges for Max is the same price that customers would pay if they purchase Max directly from the service, but with one important difference: Those who purchase Max through Sling will also get streaming access to eight HBO linear channels, just as they would if they purchased HBO via cable or satellite.

Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple of naturalization ceremonies for immigrants to the United States, but John Oliver thinks it’s time for a change. So, will the help of Will Ferrell, he’s created an alternative.
To close out his show on Sunday night, Oliver reflected on his own immigration process to the U.S., which indeed ended with a music video for Greenwood’s song. The presence of it got Oliver curious, so he dug into the details of how it came to be a piece of the ceremony.
As it turns out, the government began using it on their own, and when Greenwood found out, his team forced the Uscis into a settlement deal that now sees the singer get $700 a year for use of the song. Naturally, Oliver mocked the move, and most of Greenwood’s attempts to monetize,...

Jd Vance recently stopped by an event in Pittsburgh while on the campaign trail and, according to the evangelical preacher leading that event, it was because God sent a hurricane to derail Vance’s other plans. Yes, seriously. And that was a bit much even for John Oliver, who delights in ridiculousness.
During Sunday’s new episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver spent most of his first segment going off on Jd Vance once again, this time for his “f—kboy deflections” and lies during the Vice Presidential debate last week. But Oliver also took issue with Lance Wallnau, the preacher and televangelist hosting “The Courage Tour” nationwide.
At a recent stop in Pittsburgh, Wallnau told the crowd that Vance would be joining them because God intervened on Vance’s planned visit to North Carolina.
“I’ll be honest with you, I take that as a direct act of God,...

John Oliver is speaking out on the decision to delay Last Week Tonight segments going to YouTube.
In an interview with The Interview podcast from The New York Times, the late-night host criticized HBO for the rollout change. For the series’ 11th season, the premium cable outlet announced they are now holding back segments from the show for a few days from YouTube after they premiere. Audiences were previously able to watch the show’s main story on YouTube the morning after an episode aired.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said of the decision.
He further explained, “What I love about having the show on YouTube is that we can reach beyond HBO subscribers. That feels really important to me. I really, really appreciate the fact that they do that. I would rather they did it straight after the show...

John Oliver still isn’t happy about HBO’s decision to no longer drop YouTube clips of “Last Week Tonight” on Mondays.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said during a recent interview with New York Times podcasts. “I hope it works because I worry about it … It remains to be proven to me this was necessary.”
Since the premiere of “Last Week Tonight” in 2014, the series has posted its A story — which involves Oliver’s deep dive into the big story of the week — on YouTube the day after the show’s Sunday night episode. This strategy helped the series gain its large following over the past decade. Anyone bored by this year’s Emmy winners just hasn’t been paying attention. This was a revolution. The idea that “Shōgun” could enter the drama race and then break the history books with 18 wins was astounding — and sure didn’t seem possible even a year ago. The fact that “Hacks,” in its third season, could upset “The Bear” — even as the incumbent still smashed the record for most wins for a comedy in a single year — has changed the balance of power in that race.
And then there was perhaps the biggest shift of the night: “The Traitors” ending the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” streak in reality competition series. That’s a field where “The Amazing Race” won 10, “Drag Race” won five and “The Voice” has four — so there wasn’t much movement in the category. “The Traitors” has at least busted things up, making for a more dynamic playing field.

John Oliver returned after his latest Emmys win on Sunday night, and to kick off the show, he went right for the throat of vice presidential hopeful Jd Vance, and his claims about pets being eaten by migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Acknowledging that he was on hiatus during the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Oliver noted that he still wanted to touch on Trump’s performance — particularly when he echoed Vance’s claims about pets being eaten.
“Can you even remember a time where something like that would’ve been disqualifying? Because I can’t anymore,” Oliver mourned after playing a clip.
That said, the host was more upset with Trump’s running mate than Trump himself on this one, mostly because Jd Vance — “a man who always looks like a yassified chipmunk,” he joked — has not only doubled down on perpetuating these baseless claims, but...

The new horror and science fiction anthology, “Deepest, Darkest,” has added yet another cast mate to its already stellar lineup of genre heavyweights.
Rahul Kohli, a beloved member of Mike Flanagan’s Flanaverse and essential teammate in the crime-solving “iZombie” series, has officially joined the star-studded cast of “Deepest, Darkest,” a new horror anthology from writer and director Marc Bernardin and actor Tiffany Smith.
“‘Deepest Darkest’ is an exciting project combining all my favorite genres and my favorite people. Joining this project was a no-brainer for me,” says Kohli, expressing his enthusiasm early in the process to Variety.
Kohli joins the previously announced cast of Smith (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Rosario Dawson, Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Yetide Badaki (“American Gods”), Phil Lamarr and “Quantum Leap” stars Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett.
To top off that impressive lineup, the genre showcase is executive-produced by Akela Cooper and David Dastmalchian.

Perhaps the toughest call for an awards producer is figuring out when to start playing a winner off the stage. On Sunday night’s 76th Emmys, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” had just won yet another prize — its second in a row for scripted variety series — and the host’s speech had started to go long.
A flustered Oliver had already botched his son Hudson’s name (calling him “Husband” by mistake) and then started to talk about his dog. For the Jesse Collins Entertainment team, it felt like a good time to wrap things up. So, they kicked the playoff music into high gear.
And then, Oliver revealed the kicker, as the orchestral music got louder: The dog had just died.
“I was like, ‘oh, take the music down!’” executive producer Jesse Collins laughs about that unexpected moment. “You’re just trying to make a call. And then...

Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building went into Sunday night’s 2024 Emmys with 21 nominations, the third most of any series this year, with star Selena Gomez landing her first acting nod for her role on the show and Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd among the glitzy season three additions up for Emmy awards. And the show even got an early moment in Sunday night’s telecast with Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short presenting the first award of the evening after being introduced by hosts Dan and Eugene Levy, the latter appearing in the fourth, current season of Only Murders.
But while its fellow contenders at the top of the nominees peak (Shogun and The Bear) picked up numerous trophies on Sunday night, the star-studded murder mystery comedy failed to win a single award during the ABC telecast.

Even before the Emmys began Sunday, there wasn’t much question about which media conglomerate would end the night with the most awards. Led by 14 Creative Arts wins for Shogun, Disney had essentially an insurmountable lead in terms of awards won.
The only question was how much the Mouse House would run up the score. The answer: Quite a bit.
Led by Shogun and The Bear — which each won four awards at Sunday’s awards and set records for wins by a drama (18) and comedy (11) in a single year — FX-produced programs led all platforms with 36 wins at the 76th Emmy Awards. By itself, FX would have put Disney into first place among media conglomerates, but the company also took home 24 other awards for a record-breaking total of 60.
Netflix finished a distant second with 24 total wins across Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts awards — two more than at the 75th Emmys.
