So recently, I picked up a new anime called The Shiunji Family Children (2025). I started it on September 30 and, believe it or not, finished it the very next day on October 1. According to the internet, it falls under the Romantic Comedy / Harem genre. But honestly, don't just trust that label blindly-especially if you're planning to watch it with family. Take my word for it, this anime is way more than just a simple rom-com.
If I had to describe it, I'd call it a light-ecchi anime. It has its share of bold moments-bikini scenes, kissing scenes, and some suggestive stuff too. But to be clear, there's no actual nudity. Still, the "tone" of the show is definitely not what you'd casually play on the living room TV with family around.
Now, without giving away spoilers, let's talk a little about the story. Season 1 doesn't have a huge cast. The main character is Arata, who lives with his six siblings-five of them being sisters. Their father appears a few times throughout the season, maybe 4-5 times. As the show progresses, three of the girls start developing romantic feelings for Arata, and the entire story revolves around how he deals with these situations. Along the way, you'll find drama, romance, comedy, and even a few emotional moments sprinkled in.
Comedy is subjective, of course, but I personally found a few jokes and scenes genuinely funny. The story also manages to keep you hooked, despite being a little predictable at times.
Here's where I personally struggled: the whole "siblings romance" angle. As someone from India, especially with Hindu culture in mind, this concept just doesn't sit well. For us, "sister is sister"-whether blood-related or not. But in this anime, since they've all lived together for over 16 years, the show blurs that line and pushes things in a way that can feel very uncomfortable. And yes, there were moments where I literally felt awkward listening to certain dialogues or watching certain scenes.
That being said, since I had already started it, I decided to finish it. If I set aside the "siblings factor," then honestly, the anime itself wasn't bad. It's entertaining, the pacing is good, and towards the later episodes, the "boldness" definitely ramps up. By the time you reach episode 12, it's just... uff, let's just say it's not something you'd casually recommend to anyone.
So, here's my takeaway:
If you're planning to watch it, watch it alone. You never know when one of those "unexpected scenes" will pop up.
It has its funny and emotional sides, but the premise might not be comfortable for everyone.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend it to others because of the family/sibling undertone.
Still, if you're into romantic comedy with a bold edge, it might be worth a watch-just don't expect a pure wholesome rom-com.
For me, I'd rate it 7/10. Not perfect, not terrible-just one of those anime you watch, think about, and then move on.
