Jack Thorne, the feted British writer behind His Dark Materials and the upcoming Netflix series Toxic Town, has bemoaned the UK scripted funding crisis.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live’s Must Watch show, Thorne said there is a “real problem” financing British stories — and it’s beginning to bite in the development room.
“The type of shows that I love, not necessarily that I’ve written, are under threat and new writers that want to write this sort of thing are being discouraged from it by the state of the market,” he said.
As Deadline detailed in a long read on the crisis earlier this month, a confluence of issues is preventing local stories from getting the funding required to go into production. As many as 15 greenlit shows are stuck in limbo.

British TV drama is entering its “austerity” era. That was the startling observation of one seasoned producer, reflecting confidentially on the panic among his peers since the turn of the year. Others have been more specific about a funding crisis that is the talk of Soho.
Peter Kosminsky, the BAFTA-winning director, spoke of Oscar-garlanded Mark Rylance taking a pay cut to get Season 2 of Wolf Hall made — and even then, the Tudor drama was reworked into a “chamber piece” because budgets restricted exterior scenes. Patrick Spence, producer of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, tells us that the series, which feels like a sure bet to bag BAFTAs in May, would “not have been made today.” A24’s adaptation of beloved novel Shuggie Bain for the BBC has been in limbo for nearly three years as the zeitgeisty studio struggles to finance production.

Think the years-long hiatuses between streaming TV seasons are bad? Wolf Hall says, “Hold my mead.” The follow-up series Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light debuts on PBS’s Masterpiece on Sunday, March 23, at 9/8c, nearly a full decade after the original Wolf Hall aired stateside. 2015’s Wolf Hall adapted two of Hilary Mantel’s historical novels for the screen, the 2009 book of the same name and the 2012 sequel Bring Up the Bodies. And Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light adapts the final novel of the trilogy, picking up right where the series Wolf Hall left off. But let’s unwind the scroll a little more and get you reacquainted with what Wolf Hall depicted so many years ago. The series starts with King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis) firing Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Jonathan Pryce) as his lord chancellor after Wolsey failed to get Henry’s marriage to Katherine...

Exclusive: Peter Kosminsky, the BAFTA-winning television director and writer, has claimed that the funding emergency for British dramas is the “greatest crisis we’ve ever faced in my working lifetime.”
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, the Wolf Hall director claimed that the industry is in danger of self-censoring provocative, public-interest series because of the risk that they won’t secure the necessary finance to enter production.
The funding crisis is dominating discussions in the UK scripted community, as executives lament a perfect storm of issues, including U.S. streamers pulling back from co-production, shrinking international sales advances, persistent inflation, ad revenue declines, and BBC funding cuts.
Pact, the UK producer trade body, estimates that there are around 15 British series that have been greenlit but are unable to enter production because of funding shortfalls. The BBC has admitted multiple shows are in “limbo,” with Deadline revealing that one series experiencing...

Exclusive: The adaptation of Booker Prize-winner Shuggie Bain has emerged as one of the BBC’s “stuck in limbo” projects as drama boss Lindsay Salt blames a “perfect storm” for the funding crisis but says “we are as creatively ambitious as ever.”
BBC shows that have been greenlit but do not have the budget to get to screen have been the talk of UK TV circles ever since super-producer Jane Featherstone told a public inquiry that the BBC has “multiple shows which through no fault of their own they can’t fund.”
Two weeks later, the BBC acknowledged in a submission to the same parliamentary inquiry that it is struggling to get shows across all genres into production, “even those that have been greenlit by our commissioners.” Wolf Hall director Peter Kosminsky said in his submission that there are 15 such shows across the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, with BBC...

Director Peter Kosminsky, known for the acclaimed Wolf Hall, is raising concerns about the state of high-budget TV in the UK. In evidence submitted to a parliamentary inquiry, he explained how The Mirror and the Light, the follow-up to Wolf Hall, barely made it to screens.
Kosminsky shared that if they tried to create The Mirror and the Light today, it simply wouldn’t happen. Even with the success of Wolf Hall, which starred Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell and earned multiple awards, including a Golden Globe, streamers turned down the final chapter of Hilary Mantel’s trilogy.
The production only moved forward because key team members, including the lead actor, writer, and director, agreed to work for reduced fees. Kosminsky noted they had spent ten years developing the series, but the financial realities of making it were brutal.

Wolf Hall director Peter Kosminsky has revealed that Mark Rylance took a “significant” pay cut on the Tudor drama after streamers declined to co-produce Season 2 with the BBC.
In written evidence to British lawmakers, Kosminsky said it was only possible to begin production on the Golden Globe-winning series after “the producer, the writer, the director and the leading actor all gave up a significant proportion of their fees.”
Reflecting on the Playground drama, titled Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, he added: “We had shepherded the series through a ten-year development process but, in the end, it was necessary for us to work for very little to get the show made.” PBS boarded the Hilary Mantel series in the U.S.
He said Wolf Hall was indicative of a wider reticence among U.S. streamers to invest in British storytelling. The BBC and others have said that the shrinking...

“Wolf Hall” director Peter Kosminsky is sounding the alarm about the state of U.K. high-end television, writing in evidence submitted to a parliamentary committee that the series’ second part, “The Mirror and the Light,” nearly didn’t get made.
In a submission to the culture, media and sport committee’s inquiry into British film and high-end TV, Kosminsky said that “were we to try to make ‘The Mirror and the Light’ today, we would not succeed.”
“Wolf Hall,” which debuted in 2015 on BBC Two, stars Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell in an adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s first two novels in the trilogy of the same name. It earned international acclaim, receiving eight Emmy nominations and winning best miniseries or TV film at the Golden Globes. Despite this, Kosminsky said that when he pitched final chapter “The Mirror and the Light” to streamers, “they all turned it down.”

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, episode 6.The finale of Wolf Hall delivered a powerful and poignant conclusion. The prestige historical drama returned this year after a long hiatus but made sure the wait was worth it throughout the sophomore season. The finale employs a recurring motif that has become a hallmark of the series: the striking juxtaposition of death and Henry VIII's marriages in Wolf Hall. This cyclical structure, evident from the very first episode, reaches its zenith as Thomas Cromwell's (Mark Rylance) execution is dramatically offset by Henry VIII's (Damian Lewis) marriage to Catherine Howard (Summer Richards).
This mirroring not only provides a sense of closure but also draws compelling parallels between Cromwell and Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy), highlighting the ruthless nature of Tudor court politics and the precariousness of even the most powerful positions. Along with the artistic allegories used in Wolf Hall's tapestries,...

Veteran TV actor Barbara Marten is the standout in another uneven Dune: Prophecy chapter. Our review of episode 5:

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, Episode 5.Episode 5 of the long-awaited Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light delves into Henry VIII’s courtship of Anne of Cleves. This follows the death of Jane Seymour after childbirth. The highly-rated period drama often faithfully portrays events from real history, even down to artifact details like the tapestry shown in Wolf Hall episode 3.
Episode 5 continues this by detailing the oddities in the courtship between Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. Thomas Cromwell’s role in the proceedings is the focus, but strangely, the real story of their disastrous non-romance fades into the background. Even their initial meeting is merely described and not dramatized, which is a missed opportunity in this otherwise gripping series. This is a slight comedown from Wolf Hall’s previous episode which had Cromwell haunted by Anne Boleyn’s death.

While Netflix's The Witcher has had its ups and downs over its three seasons so far, especially due to concerns around Geralt being recast as Liam Hemsworth, one part of the show has always been a wild success — the character of Jaskier, Geralt's best friend and frequent source of irritation, played by Joey Batey. A fantasy novel by Alan Moore is getting a television adaptation. An influential author, known for his seminal comic book work, Moore is behind titles such as Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Batman: The Killing Joke, From Hell, and Swamp Thing. However, he has a reputation for holding oppositional views of adaptations, including his own, and has argued that he aims to illuminate what comic books are capable of as a storytelling medium rather than translating it into a different format. But he is significantly more positive about an adaptation that's just been announced.

Part of this is dramatized by repeated flashbacks to Anne Boleyn’s execution in Wolf Hall season 1, as well as disturbing scenes of her ghost supposedly haunting him.
The ghost of Anne implies a guilty conscience. A big part of the storytelling of the show, and indeed its source material by Hillary Mantel, is filling in the blanks. It brings history to life by imagining the stoic Cromwell’s hidden personal feelings. However, it is fair for viewers to question whether he truly felt guilty about what he did to Anne – especially after other historically questionable details in Wolf Hall such as his attitude to Lady Mary’s illegitimacy.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, episode 2
Episode 2 of Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light makes two strong assertions as the historical BBC drama returns for season 2 namely, that Cromwell is accused of conspiring to marry Lady Mary, which would have disastrous consequences without Henrys permission, and that he proposed to Dorothy Wolsey. The episode presents the latter coming closely after the former, suggesting it is partly a move to combat any rumored intentions to marry Mary.
As the plot unfolds, historical fact dances with dramatic license. Sometimes this is done for visual effect, like juxtaposing Annes execution with Henrys marriage to Jane Seymour. For the courtly political intrigue to work so well in the tense and brilliant series, the showrunners need to plant seeds for the downfall of Cromwell. They do this by introducing hints that there is a kernel of truth in...

The long-awaited second season of Wolf Hall, almost a decade following season 1, continues the story of the tumultuous reign of Henry VIII, beginning with Annes death. This follows the excitement of the BBCs first-look images of Wolf Halls return. Even after Anne Boleyns tragic execution ensured by Thomas Cromwells fabrications (The History Press), her shadow persists. In episode 2, Anne's ghost is shown through the presence of a book belonging to her.
A poignant scene shows Jane Seymour, newly married to Henry, poring over one of Annes personal effects. This seemingly simple act carries profound significance for Jane. It is a way to represent her relationship with Henrys past and anxieties about her own duty. The book itself stands out as an artifact concerning Henry and Annes relationship, making the scene historically questionable in the context of the Tudor era.

HBO has a Harry Potter TV show coming out in 2026 and its announcement of its ideal casting of Albus Dumbledore is very encouraging. The upcoming TV show constitutes a reboot in the Harry Potter franchise, following on from the hugely successful Harry Potter movies. Starting the movie series off in 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone featured Richard Harris as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Harris is only the first of a few actors to play Dumbledore, all of which the HBO show may struggle to beat. But the casting news is promising.

Sadly, this was Harris' final Harry Potter movie before his passing away and passing the torch to Michael Gambon, who portrayed Dumbledore brilliantly in the remaining movies. TV fans have been waiting for almost ten years for Hilary Mantel’s amazing Tudor story to end, and “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light” is coming with great excitement. This last book picks up where the last one left off, delving deeply into the last four rough years of Thomas Cromwell’s life with stunning accuracy and dramatic energy.
The amazing creative team of screenwriter Peter Straughan and director Peter Kosminsky are back together for this series, which builds on the highly acclaimed 2015 adaptation that covered the first two books in Mantel’s trilogy. With Mark Rylance’s return as Thomas Cromwell, whose performance has been praised for its nuanced, almost telepathic understanding of the complicated historical figure, they continue to turn historical stories into television art.
The new show looks like it will be a masterpiece of historical drama, condensing Mantel’s last 900-page book into six carefully made hours.

The scene opens with the grim image of the young queen’s blood washing away from the scaffold, a stark reminder of the dangers that come with power and ambition.
Thomas Cromwell, a central figure in the series, steps into the chaos left behind. He navigates through the wreckage of Anne’s downfall, ready to take on his role as principal councillor to King Henry VIII. Cromwell’s rise from humble beginnings in a blacksmith’s forge to becoming one of the most powerful politicians in England is a remarkable journey.

The producer of Disney+ hit Rivals previously told Deadline he encountered snobbery when he pitched the adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bestselling novel about sexual and professional antics among the posh country set.
Now, the producer of a lavish BBC period drama has said Rivals “is not a show I would make.”
