The people of New Orleans brace themselves for the arrival of Storm Katrina; some had the means to leave, but many did not. The storm hits and causes massive damage, but the aftermath was devastating.
It still absolutely horrifies me to think back to the news footage. The scenes of the aftermath of the hurricane shocked me like nothing else I've seen before or after.
This terrific first episode shows the buildup, what was expected, what was done to try and keep people safe, and the desperation to escape the area. It details the area, its history, how the communities came to be, and talks about the people. It's tragic to think of how many people were unable to evacuate the area because of sickness or lack of money.
The images of people packed into the Superdome are unbelievable. The footage is astonishing; the sheer scale of its force and the damage is staggering. I still don't get why that journalist was out in it; I've never understood.
The interviews gave me chills; I'll say no more for now; powerful.
One thing is clear: the people of New Orleans are incredible; respect!
8/10.
