At 10:00 Jeremy informs his girlfriend that he's picked up two hitchhikers who are cops. The two never mentioned their occupation nor are they wearing uniforms. They must have identified themselves off camera.
Beginning at 21:00 the scenery outside the car indicates that they're driving in reverse.
