Fun premise; patchy writing, self-indulgent performing

The first episode of Amy's Dead-End Dreamhouse doesn't promise well for the series. The bits and whole segments are stretched out or otherwise ill-considered. A solid joke is flanked by those that don't work.

The opening bit is something that sounds like it could be funny, Amy working two jobs on both sides of some sort of local crochet politics, but the actual bits and lines and mugging just don't work. They continue to not work for about 3 minutes. One's forced to assume that the show was rushed into production, or that the above-the-lines on the show can't tell each other no, and they just marched forward into production.

It's tough to watch an EP/writer/performer milk a bit and mug for too long when the bit was ill-conceived in the first place. I suppose they don't teach that at any level of improv.

    Wanted to like it...

A fun idea! In 2025, when adults are yearning for simpler times, you could do a lot of satire with this concept. But the host doesn't work for me; flat delivery and low energy when you need someone to counter the darkness with positivity. Instead it just drags all the comedy beats down. Deadpan comedy is harder to pull off than many think. Likewise the dialog is written really verbose, 90 WPM but hard to understand without subtitles. Maybe it will improve in later episodes. Glad people are making original stuff.

A critique of capitalism from the Big Other

In Britain we have a whole class of people who think those less successful than themselves are complete idiots. They feel it is they got there by their selves and nothing to do with the wealth they were born into or their private education that they (believe) are more knowledgeable and rational.

This just felt Iike a lecture by the same sort of person. What is the point of this show? Is this another person from a wealthy background lecturing people on how to live their lives? At the best it's dumb, at worst it is extremely condescending.

Like the infamous scene in a series on Britain's upper class - a drunk, posh man in a loud shirt driving a speedboat telling/slurring that Britain's gone to hell because of a lack of responsibility caused by the welfare system. But instead we have the mirror image an very attractive American woman - not drunk but you'd have to be watch a whole episode! - telling us plebs on how bad we have it but the inverse is take no responsibility ('accept yourself the way you are') for yourself because of capitalism?

If I can say a nice word, the set design is great.

    Almost there

I really like Maggie Mae Fish but this show feels like the script wasn't fully fleshed out. Set design is 10/10 and I really like the idea of the show. I'm giving 8/10 because it deserves a higher average rating but I think I could be better.

I would still recommend checking it out but this isn't a must watch.

That being said, I will continue to watch and I look forward to any future projects, even a second season, Maggie has in the works. ('Unrated' on Nebula was great)
