Isabelle Huppert in Elle (2016)

FAQ

Elle

FAQ

Michelle, a boss in a videogame developer, is raped in her kitchen. As Sheila O'Malley put it so well, perhaps only Paul Verhoeven would open a film mid-rape.

As she tries to get on with her life, she begins to receive messages from the rapist. She begins arming herself and trying to investigate, to figure out who raped her.

Complicating matters is that her father was a religious fanatic who killed multiple neighbours and talked her into helping him dispose of the bodies. She was a small child at that time, but people still remember.

    Yes. Philippe Djian's "Oh..."

This writer has not read this book. One source states that a paragraph appears early in it, from the protagonist's son's point of view that features slut-shaming and shaming the mother for having cosmetic surgery.

The film is far better than such source material would have you believe.
