Shallow
A good short movie should be like shelter or let you down. Those are so much shorter but convey so much more.
A saving grace for this is the music. Animation look good on still frame but sometime stiff on motion.
Incredible emotional short film: home sickness, living as an immigrant
I feel that the film should've been longer, or some parts cut to make room for more depth. Some designs and animation felt a little bit cheap, but it was alright. The quality of the OST is incredible. Thank you for everything you do, Garnt!
Decent but way too rushed.
Given the limitations and runtime, the slow pacing makes the characters feel one dimensional, as you barely get a sense of anyone. With its 18 min budget, this might have been better if it was a smaller story, with faster pacing.
"Bao" for example, gets across a LOT with its short runtime. Bâan's ambitions and pacing would have been at home with a 60 min length, like "Look Back". But as it stands, it really doesn't have time to breathe and ends up feeling messy. There just isn't room to fit in dual protagonists, world building, plot twists, backstories, etc.
That said, the animation, voice acting, and music (which is especially good) helps to carry the project. I do hope Garnt gets another shot at it though because there is something interesting here.
Thanks for this Garnt
The only thing I will say is the same thing everyone else has already said. I wish this was longer. Part of me wants to see more of Rin's world so badly and learn more about the characters.
But I get that because of budget limitations, it wasn't possible to make this longer. And I also understand that you don't need more than what we have here to send a message. The feeling of stepping out into the unknown, out of your comfort zone and into a new place, a new life. And knowing that no matter how far you are or how long you've been away for, there's always a chance to come back to that familiar place.
Thank you so much Garnt, Kevin and everyone who made this possible. Glad I got to watch this.
Amazing show. (non-biased fr fr)
Using the projecting technique with Baan, though, I actually shed a tear. The theme it explores is partially foreign to me, yet somehow it hit me in a way I didn't expect. You can really feel Gigguk's passion behind it, his creativity, and even his personal preferences shining through.
It's rare that something so short leaves such a strong impression, but Baan did. And i cannot even begin to imagine the impact it would have on the large amount of people who have been / are planning to be in a situation like this, aswell as the bonus of knowing the man behind it all pretty damn well.... (shows like these should be getting animated instead of solo leveling, all the bad to mid isekais, rent a girlfriend etc.... )): )
