This eighteen part miniseries was written in its entirety (which took approximately a year) before it was cast or shot.
This series shot two seasons back to back, a highly unusual move for a television series.

Danny McBride and Bill Murray had worked together on the films Aloha and Rock the Kasbah prior to Murray being recruited for Vice Principals. While McBride was in the early phases of putting Vice Principals together, he had a chance encounter with Murray on an airplane. They had a chance to visit, and after the encounter McBride hatched the idea of Murray taking the part of Principle Wells in the first episode. McBride sent Murray an email asking if he'd be interested. Murray invited him to meet at a baseball game to discuss things. As a joke, McBride showed up to the game and presented Murray with a copy of the script in a fancy stainless steel briefcase. The very next day, Murray emailed McBride saying he had read the script and he would be "Very happy to play Principal What's-His-Name."
The original concept for this show was set to be a feature film.
