Erik Matti resigned as director due to creative difference so Jerrold Tarog was tapped as the new director for this film.
Sarah Lahbati's real life partner, Richard Gutierrez played Captain Barbell in Captain Barbell (2006). Both Darna and Captain Barbell are creations of Mars Ravelo, and appeared together in the 1986 movie Captain Barbell (1986).
A teaser trailer was shown during the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival (December 25, 2015). The visual effects of the trailer were provided by Mothership VFX, the same company that worked on some of Eric Matti's earlier films
Angel Locsin, who played Darna in Darna (2005), was the first choice of Erik Matti. Locsin agreed to reprise the role when approached by Matti; however, she was forced out of the project following a back injury.
