"The Misinterpretation Agitation" was the first great ep of "The Big Bang Theory" this season!

season 8 might not be heading towards total disaster after all.

This felt like Big Bang was actually trying to focus on some relevant issues instead of just stereotypes. The Bernedette-Amy-Penny triumvirate discussion of &#39;can&#39;t women express their sexuality and intelligence at the same time&#39; nicely mixed with Dr Lorbis&#39;s infatuation with Penny after a sales pitch resulted in some physical contact. Leonard finding out that Penny hid her engagement ring for sales purpose could easily have resulted in a stereotypical bland tit-for-tat, but they resolved it pretty maturely. And Amy&#39;s own inhibitions about not being thought of hot by Sheldon or other people versus Bernedette&#39;s perceptions that one can be both was engaging, culminating in a lash-out when Amy made the publication back out of the photo-shoot. As for Dr Lorbis, played creepily by Billy Bob Thornton (almost expected a Lorne Malvo type shootout), he brought back the question of why someone like him (Leonard) was able to get the girl....and while the geek aspect was a kind of cheap out, Penny really came in her own in this episode. Now if only Leonard can.

The Misinterpretation Agitation

If anyone doubted the premise of this review&#39;s header, the evidence is certainly sufficient by now. After getting James Earl Jones to portray a buffoonish version of himself (Season 7; Episode 14), he&#39;s persuaded Billy Bob Thornton to play the lamest, most socially clueless character of his career. Karl Childers in Slingbade was a mix of James Bond and Oscar Wilde compared this episode&#39;s Dr. Lorvis. I&#39;m a latecomer to the series, finding the binge somewhere between irresistible and addictive. The writing is consistently outstanding, and celeb appearances like this are sensational.

I&#39;ve always been a big fan of Billy Bob Thornton. Here, he plays a doctor who is a customer of Penny in her new job. He decides she is flirting with him and brings her roses. He ends up engaging with the gang, Penny not included, and hanging around. He also has a virtual museum of Science Fiction artifacts and has operated on many celebrities. Lots of great stuff, but Thornton is at his very best.

In a nutshell of this ep of &quot;The Big Bang Theory&quot;: Sheldon lets a man with roses in the building, thinking he&#39;s the delivery man. He&#39;s actually a Dr. Lorvis (Billy Bob Thornton) who thinks Penny has the hots for him because of her briefly touching his arm. So Sheldon, still a bet naive on the social graces side, lets him knock on Penny&#39;s door. He tells Leonard who confronts the doc in a kindly way. Sheldon invites the doc for tea, obviously he should know the social way of doing things...It turns out Lorvis has a wide collection of sci-fi stuff that gets them all wanting to go to his house. Oh, Penny had arrived in the middle of their conversation and had a talk with Leonard about why she didn&#39;t wear her engagement ring during her duties but since they&#39;re distracted by the doc&#39;s sudden coolness, he&#39;s willing to not completely ignore him. Oh, and Bernadette got offered a chance to model for a magazine&#39;s sexiest scientist feature but Amy put the kibosh on that when she wrote an angry e-mail to the publication. I&#39;ll stop there and just say this was the first great ep of &quot;The Big Bang Theory&quot; this season with Billy Bob Thornton hilarious as the reserved Dr. Lorvis. So on that note, I highly recommend &quot;The Misinterpretation Agitation&quot; ep of &quot;The Big Bang Theory&quot;. P.S. I watched this the day after finding out Carol Ann Susi-voice of Howard&#39;s mom-died. So I guess we won&#39;t ever hear her yell at Howard ever again...

Let&#39;s face it, season 8 was abominable until now. At some points the jokes were so easy they made me grim instead of grin, the characters evolved to much (another reviewer rightly quoted Sheldon: &quot;Everything is changing and it&#39;s simply too much.&quot;) and the girls (Penny, Amy, Bernadette...) brought to much drama into the series. However, I feel the tide is changing. This last episode contained more quality-Sheldon, less relationship-trauma, good old fashioned &#39;nerdiness&#39; and slightly more refined humor. Still, in this episode, a new character was introduced; doctor Lorvis. His acting might have been great, but why on earth did he have to be like Professor Proton? Surely it mustn&#39;t be that hard to create a new personality instead of copying one? If the writers polished the script a bit, made it spicy (what about a tremendous plot twist?) and thus less predictable, more people would be inclined to keep on watching the series.
