The Germans who first laid the minefields kept records of how many mines had been lain in each section of the beach. The Danish were in possession of these records, or at least that is what is suggested in the film, hence the great importance of counting.

It was not uncommon for foreigners, especially ones from occupied countries, to serve in the British armed forces. Typically they would be formed into their own company or squadron by nationality.

Additionally the para course is open to any serving member of the services. If they can pass the test it entitles them to wear the para wings and the maroon beret.

The Geneva Convention of 1929 made a distinction between prisoners of war and surrendered personnel. The Danes decided to classify the soldiers in this mission as surrendered.

In 1949 the Geneva Convention was updated and this sort of thing was outlawed.
