Most biopics are thuddingly prosaic: There’s a lot of “this happened, then that happened,” performed by a famous person covering themselves in latex in an attempt to resemble another famous person.
In the hands of British auteur Terence Davies, however, biopics can be poetry, although his choice of subject matter probably helps in that department. On the heels of his gorgeous and contemplative “A Quiet Passion,” about the life of Emily Dickinson, he returns with another passionately quiet portrait, this time exploring Siegfried Sassoon in “Benediction.”
It’s an impressionistic collage, and Davies skillfully jumps from the 1910s to the 1960s and back again. “Benediction” fleetingly encapsulates the horrors of WWI — Sassoon went from being a decorated soldier to an outspoken critic against those who would prolong the conflict — the shadow-world of British gay men in the decades before homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK, and the bitterness of...

Fulwell 73 have teamed with Rose Pictures (“Kill Your Darlings”) to co-produce a feature about “Frankenstein” author Mary Shelley, Variety has learned exclusively.
Titled “Mary’s Monster,” it follows Shelley as she struggles to complete her gothic masterpiece, which was published in 1818.
Farren Blackburn will direct the feature from a screenplay by Deborah Baxtrom (“Living With Frankenstein”). The logline reads, “Terrified of giving voice to the darkness of her subconscious mind, Mary Shelley locks into a dangerous battle with her own ‘inner monster’ as she struggles to write her seminal science fiction novel, ‘Frankenstein.'”
The 204-year-old book, considered by experts to be the world’s first science fiction novel, has inspired countless film, television and theatrical adaptations. Shelley is believed to have come up with the novel at the age of 19 during a stay by Lake Geneva with her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and the poet Lord Byron, where the...

MRC Film has launched Landline Pictures, a new label targeting audiences over 50. Veteran producer Amy Baer has been tapped to lead the new venture.
According to a release announcing the news, Landline Pictures “will focus on uplifting and entertaining stories that are about and targeting the over 50 demographic, yet commercial and conceptual enough to cross over to a broader audience.”

In a year that presents the opportunity for new and diverse voices in the awards race, another one has been added to the mix for best original score. Variety has learned exclusively that neo-classical composer Amelia Warner will helm the music for John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan.
Best known for her work on Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” in 2018, Warner has dabbled both in music and acting. With roles in “Quills,” “Aeon Flux” and “Winter Passing,” this film marks just her third film composition. Warner was named the breakthrough composer of the year at the 2019 International Film Music Critics Awards.
While the awards season could present a record-breaking number of women nominated in categories like best picture and director, the race for best original score is very limited for female composers. Warner hopes to break through the male-heavy list of contenders that...

Amy Baer, who has deep industry experience as a top studio executive and more recently as a producer working with major talent, has been elected board president of Women in Film. She steps into the role at a critical juncture in Hollywood, as the entertainment industry faces a broad reckoning over gender disparities and sexual harassment.
Baer takes over for outgoing president Cathy Schulman, who will remain on the board and assume a new role as chair of an advisory council for the organization. Schulman will preside over the Crystal + Lucy Awards on June 13, and two days later will be succeeded as president by Baer. In a statement, Schulman praised her successor as a “proven industry leader and entrepreneur whose unique experience spans major studios, independent financiers, and producing.” She added, “We are in a tipping-point moment, where sustainable gender equality can be achieved, and I am thrilled to turn...

Saudi Arabian director Haifaa Al-Mansour’s “The Perfect Candidate,” a comedic drama about a young female physician who maneuvers through her conservative, male-dominated society to run in municipal elections, will be the first film supported by the Arab kingdom’s new national film organization, the Saudi Film Council.
“Candidate” will be produced by the director’s own Al Mansour Productions in Saudi Arabia and by Gerhard Meixner and Roman Paul’s Berlin-based Razor Film Produktion. They have described the film as a somewhat ironic look at the new developments in Saudi Arabia caused by women being allowed to contest local elections.
The film’s Saudi protagonist is frustrated after being turned back at the airport because her travel permission from her male guardian isn’t up to date. She then embarks on an absurd campaign that juggles strict social norms, gender segregation and the influence of her eccentric family, according to the film’s synopsis,...

A teenage woman is trapped by the restrictions of her position in a male dominated society. The torrid true-life tale of how a passionate love affair fueled the creation of trailblazing writer Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterwork, Frankenstein.
Elle Fanning stars as Mary Shelley.
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818).
Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin. The film passes through the following — mostly traumatic episodes — of her busy, short life.
Elle Fanning is superb. It focuses on the relationship with Shelley and the visit to the peculiar home of Lord Byron.
Her life is worth knowing a bit. After her mother’s death — the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft — less than a month after her daughter Mary was born, Mary was raised by Godwin,...

Nearly two years after Downton Abbey went off the air, most of the beloved ensemble cast is back in action on screen and stage, with Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens and Joanne Froggatt leading several high-profile projects coming out this fall.
2017 Fall Preview: Et's Complete Coverage
Even though the period drama ended in 2015, this year can definitely be dubbed “2017: Life After Abbey.” And to think, all we care about is a Downton Abbey movie!

Jane Goodall’s Remarkable Career Gets a Much-Deserved Documentary in Revelatory ‘Jane’ — Tiff Review
Brett Morgen’s revelatory “Jane” offers up contributions from a bounty of some of film’s finest working professionals, from the award-winning Morgen himself to composer Philip Glass and cinematographer Ellen Kuras, but the real star is reams of lauded wildlife photographer Hugo van Lawick’s pristine 16mm footage, following the early years of wildlife conservationist Jane Goodall, mostly set in her adopted home of Gombe, Tanzania. Well, the real star is Goodall (and her chimps, her accomplishments, and her passion, but mostly just the eponymous Jane), but the footage itself is a sterling testament to not just Goodall’s career, but also Morgen’s incredible eye and craftsmanship.
Gifted with so much raw material — and a cooperative Goodall, who offered up interviews and materials and necessary context at seemingly every turn — Morgen has made the definitive portrait of Goodall, one that is also remarkably accessible and almost unbearably tender.

If after its first weekend the Toronto International Film Festival is so far inconclusive, one thing is truly clear: This year’s Tiff belongs to the women. One-third of the films in the official selection were directed by women, a new high, including such notable works as Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” Lynn Shelton’s “Outside In,” Valerie Faris (with Jonathan Dayton)’s “Battle of the Sexes,” Susanna White’s “Woman Walks Ahead,” Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley,” Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider,” Clio Barnard’s “Dark River” and Nora Twomey’s “The Breadwinner.” But more than that, the great...

Saturday night at the Toronto International Film Festival was a night for ambitious period dramas from relatively new directors only one movie removed from making small indies. First there was “Wadjda” director Haifaa al-Mansour with the uneven literary saga “Mary Shelley” — and about an hour after that film let out at Roy Thomson Hall, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon premiered his new film, “The Current War,” a block away at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Gomez-Rejon’s film begins in 1880 — when, as a title card tells us, “the world is still lit by...

Earlier today, the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival unveiled its lineup, bringing to the forefront a number of potential Academy Award contenders for this year. Toronto often launches a fair amount of awards players into the mix, so the expectation is that the same will be the case here. Tiff has quite the slate planned, with more to come, as this was just the first wave. Everything announced so far will be at the end of this piece, but first I do want to call out some of the possible prestige projects already set for the fest. From there, we’ll move on to the complete list. You’ll see the lineup below, but first, a quick mention of some of the potentially Oscar friendly titles in the mix. They include Battle of the Sexes from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, Bpm (Beats Per Minute) from Robin Campillo, Call Me By Your Name from Luca Guadagnino,...

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival still is over a month from kicking off, but the starry annual event is pulling out zero stops when it comes to its first official slate announcement. The festival will close out with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledo’s “C’est la vie!,” and the Special Presentations section will open with Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, “Lady Bird,” and close with Amr Salama’s “Sheikh Jackson.”
Today’s first glimpse of this year’s programing include a slew of 2017’s most anticipated features, including Guillermo del Toro’s adult fairy tale “The Shape of Water,” Alexander Payne’s Matt Damon-starring comedy “Downsizing,” Darren Aronofsky’s secretive “mother!,” George Clooney’s reportedly uber-violent “Suburbicon,” and Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
And that is just the tip of a very big iceberg, one that today includes the announcement of both Gala and Special Presentations titles.

“3 Generations” has courted controversy since its production, with the film getting negative initial buzz after hiring cisgender actress Elle Fanning to play a transgender teen boy in a lead role. Furthermore, the Weinstein Company recently drummed up some attention of their own after publicly protesting the film’s R rating. Now the trailer has arrived to show audiences a first look at the actual footage.
The NYC-centric film, which also stars Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon, follows the three generations of women as they live under the same roof and help Fanning’s Ray deal with growing up different. Sarandon plays Ray’s lesbian grandmother trying to understand the situation, while Watts is his single mother, doing the best she can to help her son.

Screen investigates which films from around the world could launch on the Croisette, including on opening night.
With just over a month to go before the line-up for this year’s Cannes Film Festival is unveiled in Paris, Croisette predictions and wish lists are hitting the web thick and fast.
Screen’s network of correspondents and contributors around the world have been putting out feelers to get a sense of what might or might not make it to the Palais du Cinéma or one of the parallel sections.
Just like the Oscars, this year’s festival is likely to unfold amid a politically-charged atmosphere. Beyond Trump and the rise of populism across the globe, France will be digesting the result of its own presidential election on May 7. Against this background, the festival will be feting its 70th edition.

After a major last year with 20th Century Women and The Neon Demon, Elle Fanning‘s streak looks to continue into 2017. This week we got the fantastic first trailer for The Beguiled and she’s also leading How to Talk to Girls at Parties, but that’s not all. The actress is portraying the legendary author Mary Shelley in a new drama and the first look has arrived.
Aptly titled Mary Shelley (previously going by A Storm in the Stars), the biopic about the Frankenstein author comes from director Haifaa al-Mansour, who made a strong impression with her debut Wadjda just a few years back. Also starring Douglas Booth, Bel Powley, Maisie Williams, Joanne Froggatt and Tom Sturridge, the film depicts the early years of the author as she begins a relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
With footage screening at Berlinale for buyers, hopefully this gets picked up soon.

Emma Jensen.
Brisbane native Emma Jensen talks to Harry Windsor about her career as a writer and the path to her first feature, 'A Storm in the Stars', starring Elle Fanning and Douglas Booth and set for release this year.
How did you get into writing?
My background is in script development. I started as a producer.s assistant in London 17 years ago at Film4. I was their second assistant. I went to Queensland College of Art and studied film and television, and then graduated and thought — now what do I do? So I spent a few years in illustrious careers like Sizzler and working in a bank and I got to the point where I thought, maybe I should do that backpacking thing. I signed up with a temp agency and they asked if I wanted to do half a day at Film4, and I was like,...
