This is Part One in a series about Chicago’s Experimental Film Coalition; and covers the organization’s inception.
In 1983, a group in Chicago, Illinois formed the Experimental Film Coalition to promote and provide support nationally for independent, avant-garde, experimental and underground filmmakers. In their hometown, the Coalition hosted monthly screenings, founded a long running film festival and published two periodicals during their decade-plus existence.
Perhaps the first mention of the Coalition was in a “Letter to the Editor” in the February 25, 1983 edition of Crumbs, a student publication at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Saic).
The unsigned letter lays out the writer’s frustration with the experimental filmmaker’s extreme difficulty in finding funding to create work, as opposed to traditional narrative and documentary filmmakers. The plan for the Coalition was to create a non-profit corporation to help “apply and lobby for private, state, and federal funds” for experimental filmmakers nationwide.

Sad.
Trump doesn’t hesitate to label something sad. In fact, he says it rather often, in both a serious way (when something actually brings him sorrow) or as an insult (when it’s a synonym for pathetic). By our count, he’s said it 64 times on Twitter alone. These are the people,...

From the Los Angeles Times, February 28, 1959:
Conviction of Raymond Rohauer, 34, on the misdemeanor charge of exhibiting “obscene, indecent and immoral” motion pictures was reversed yesterday by the Appellate Department of Superior Court.
Rohauer was arrested Oct. 11, 1957, at a theater he was operating, 366 N La Cienga Blvd., following the showing of two films, “Fireworks” and “Voices.” Police charged that the pictures dealt with homosexuality and one depicted a nude woman.
But in an opinion written by Judge Frank G. Swain and concurred in by Judge Edward T. Bishop the appellate court found that the films merely discussed sexual problems and that the showing of a disrobed woman was not in itself obscene. Judge Leon T. David dissented.
Rohauer was found guilty Feb. 20, 1958 and later was fined $250 and placed on three years’ probation. He appealed through Atty. Stanley Fleishman. The conviction was recorded in Municipal Court.

There was no This Is Us last night, but it was a primetime with a bit of song and dance, some explosions and a lot of encores. The second-to-last episode of the often-comedic crime procedural Bones (0.8/3) saw a blast go off and ratings rise. Coming off a New Girl (0.8/3) that was even with its March 14 show and an episode of The Mick (0.8/3) that was down a tenth from its last original February 28, Bones, which is wrapping 12th season, was up 14% among adults 18-49…...

NBC’s “This Is Us” broke series records on Tuesday, reaching 11 million total viewers with its Season 1 penultimate episode. The show also set a new high-water mark in the key 18-49 demographic for a regular episode, putting up a 2.9 rating. “This Is Us” posted a 3.0 for a special January 10 airing at 10 p.m., which followed President Obama’s farewell address. Forget the lead-in asterisk, that one has to be thrown away due to its time slot. Originally, last night was intended to be the show’s Season 1 finale, though President Trump’s February 28 address to the nation pushed it back a week.

A Democratic congressman has apologized for making a lewd joke about White House adviser Kellyanne Conway’s now-infamous Oval Office couch picture.
Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana referenced the controversial photo of Conway kneeling on a couch in the Oval Office during a comedy routine at last week’s annual Washington Press Club Foundation congressional dinner, saying President Trump‘s top adviser looked “kind of familiar there in that position.”
The joke was met by groans from the room full of journalists, congressional staffers and politicians, ABC News reported.
After initially defending his comment, Richmond issued an apology Sunday night.

It’s awful, it’s terrible, it’s difficult to watch — but it’s finally available in its original 3-D, in the improved Space-Vision process. A giant monkey attacks Seoul, trashing cardboard buildings, toy boats and a dead shark (and it’s not shamming). Keep a good movie on hand to rinse this one away immediately afterwards. Not recommended for people taking prescription medication. If simians persist, consult your doctor.

It’s the question of the week: Where were you when the %100 Rotten Tomatoes score for Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” was broken? The Jordan Peele-directed social thriller had gotten all perfect reviews across the board from 149 critics, a rare feat that is pretty awesome considering the movie is a Jason Blum horror film and not the prestige dramas that usually rank high on the Tomatometer.

What do you get when you combine an invisible dog, a frozen man in a diving suit, and a gender bending shocker? One kick ass show, that's what!
On Legion Season 1 Episode 4, answers are Finally being given, and boy, are we in for a wild ride going forward. In addition to telling us what the deal was with Kerry and Cary Loudermilk, we are finally drilling down to what's Really going on with David.
I was starting to get frustrated with the "unreliable narrator" model being used so far, and maybe the show-runners realized you can't build an entire series that way.
Thankfully, they fixed it in one fell swoop.
Melanie, finally figuring out they were spinning their wheels, sent the Scooby gang out into the real world to suss out just what was real and what wasn't. Thank you, Jesus!
Syd: What was real? That was the mission. We had seen things: heard things.

Can't you just picture the inscription on a certain mighty Martian marine's tombstone?
"Here lies Badass Bobbie Draper. She was always spoiling for a fight. If she'd only heeded the age-old Earth adage: 'Be careful what you wish for, because you mIght get it," she might've lived a little longer.
No amount of mixed-martial arts or combat training looks enough to save Bobbie — lying wounded on Ganymede's surface with a cracked helmet — from whatever the hell that sentient being is, standing above her and looking seriously pissed off.
Bobbie Draper's apparent demise, along with the deaths of her comrades in her unit and aboard the Martian military ship, the Scirroco, was one of several threads featured on The Expanse Season 2 Episode 6.
There were so many, in fact, this may have been the series' most ambitious, if not stellar, hour. It went down like an overstuffed burger with everything on it — tantalizingly juicy and delicious looking,...

The quest to bring Alice back took a dramatic turn.
When Quentin couldn't summon her Niffin, he headed back to Earth to say goodbye beside her parents on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 6 "The Cock Barrens."
That's when he received the biggest surprise of them all: Alice's Niffin survived the fight with his demon.
And Alice has been hitching a ride inside Quentin's tattoo all this time!
We have to take a moment to applaud this twist.
I assumed Alice would be back from the moment she appeared to die. These guys are magicians. They regularly travel to a magical fantasy world. How hard could it be to resurrect a powerful magician?
Alice did tell the Beast she knew what she was doing on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 3. She chose to become a Niffin. But now we have a bigger question: did she do it just to save her friends and stop the Beast?...
