Leighton-5's rating
It is a suspenseful film, never boring, kind of seductive. It's major flaw is the lack of chemistry between the Huppert-Dutronc couple. There is no way of taking this couple seriously, even as a dysfunctional pair: she is just too robotic and cruel and their communication (or lack therof) is never convincing.
A brilliant and touching TV documentary about the singing career of Jacques Brel, beginning with his childhood in Belgium. Amazing theatrical performances of songs along with interviews illustrate biographical points. The film does a great job of bringing out the intensity of the songs and the passionately idealistic nature of the singer.
This is a pretty empty film. The characters are cardboard (sex objects at best, in a Hollywood sort of way), except perhaps for uncle Ramon who is less of a chiché than the others. Screenplay lacks follow-through and editing. The one redeeming thing about the film would be the sound track, which contains some good Latin American folk songs.
