  • It may be 3-D, but the film is still FLAT

I just came home from watching it, and everyone is running for the Advils, it seems that the 3-D gave us all headaches. Anyways, here is my review.

I have had a 3-D book since I was a kid, and it came with it's own pair of 3-D glasses. You know the old fasioned kind, the red and blue shaded glasses that gives everything the red & blue tint. It is a very cool book with the old kind of 3-D.

Now, I remember in the 80's, all the NEW 3-D movies had a whole new 3-D. No longer were 3-D movies limited to the red & blue tint that required the red & blue shaded glasses, the glasses that were needed were clear & POLORIZED....it kept the movie in FULL color and gave the 3-D film a cleaner and sharper image.

I heard that this movie was a whole new approach to 3 demention, so I was excited about seeing this. But imagine my surprise when I bought the tickets when they handed me red & blue shaded 3-D glasses.

The only new approach is the computer graphics used in creating 3-D images. Instead of throwing real items towards the camera to make you duck in your seat, now there are computer generated items floating around and flying towards you. The special effects were, as always, top quality...but honestly...there was nothing new or special about the special effects. In reality, you feel as though you've seen it all before.

As for the 3-D effects. I must say how disappointed I was. The color in the film during the 3-D scenes seemed dull and almost a sepia tone, except for the red & blue tint used to make the images in 3-D.

I REALLY expected at LEAST a POLORIZED image for a bolder color and clearer 3 demention. Instead, all I got was a trip down memory lane with the old fashioned 3-D.

Now, if you have never SEEN a 3-D movie, dont get me wrong, it STILL is a spactacular thing to see, and you SHOULD experience it. The kids will LOVE it.

As for the storyline in this film....well, forget it. This wasn't created to carry a plot, it was created to become a cash-cow in the Spy Kids series and used 3-D to draw you in. It worked, but this plot didn't.

And if THIS film doesn't KILL Sylvester Stallone's movie career, then it's ALREADY DEAD! I was never more embarressed for an actor before than I was for him in this one. This was almost like seeing him wave a white flag and admit to being an aging Hollywood cast-away who is grasping at ANYTHING to stay on screen. Think Bette Davis's charactor in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

Oh well. Your kids will love this 3-D mess, and if your easily amused, you might also.

  • A timeless classic that will never loose it's charm

If your looking for a serious musical based on Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, keep looking. But if you are looking for the most FUN-FILLED, musical-romantic-fantasy-comic SPOOF, then look no furthur.

THE PIRATE MOVIE never once took itself seriously, and neither should you. In 1982, THE PIRATE MOVIE was released and musical comdies were never the same. Exploding with energy but lacking in talent, THE PIRATE MOVIE celebrated the rebirth of the musicals (Grease, Xanadu), spoofed the current blockbusters (Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars), and radically updated a classic tale of Pirates and swash-buckling heros, while offering musical numbers that reflected the rock-n-roll mood of the 80's.

Kristi McNichol and Christopher Atkins may not have displayed the talents of Academy Award winners, but they brought to the film all the fun and energy that made this film EXPLODE with excitement. The chemistry between these two will be remembered from that first kiss (wow, what a kiss) to the HAPPY ENDING.

I was 13 years old when I saw this film in a theater, and I enjoyed it SO much, I stayed and watched it twice. Since the discovery of the lasor-disk to the VCR, I have enjoyed the movie over and over again through the years, till mine got worn by use.

I recently rediscovered this gem of a movie in my local Blockbuster Video and watched it all over again with my own daughter. She is now the newest fan of this incredibly entertaining film. I was able to barter with the local store and now this copy is ours to keep and to enjoy all over again and again.

We look forward to the day when CBS/FOX Video wises up and releases it on DVD to entertain a whole new generation. But till they do...we will wear out yet ANOTHER copy of THE PIRATE MOVIE on VHS.

  • The Best Summer Blockbuster in years

As one of the newest fans of X-Men, I was very excited for this film to be released. I had only DISCOVERED the first film about 3 months ago, and was BLOWN away. Last night, my wife and I attended the late showing and had the WORST MOVIE THEATER experience in our lives. No air conditioning, noisy crowd, JAMMED seats, spilled concessions, and fat ladies in the row who wouldn't move for us.

Well, in SPITE of our miserable experience, I must admit that X-MEN 2 was one of the BEST summer films in a few years. This was not just a good film, this was an EXPERIENCE that movie magic is all about.

Yes, there WERE a lot of characters to focus on, and in order to do that, some of our favorite characters from the first one were sacrificed for newer ones, but even the NEW characters were interresting enough that I could forgive the absence of a few others. Cyclops got the worst screen time than anyone else, I actually MISSED him in this film.

But in order to develope the new villian, story-lines, and character developements, I thought Brian Singer did OUTSTANDING and gave us MAGIC.

Now, can I wait till the NEXT X-MEN? I'll just have to see this one a few more times.
