At the risk of sounding cliché, the show is heartfelt + hilarious with the right amount of edginess. I love every member of the cast, and it makes me wish I had five brothers. The mom is amazing and Rafa/Primo is one lucky kid. I'm so grateful to be able to watch a show with positive role models, even if they aren't perfect. The characters are distinct personalities, which adds to the humor, The plot lines were clever and wrapped up nicely in eight episodes (although a longer season would have been welcome). My favorite episode was the one about the family picnic. I hope this show comes back for a few more seasons.
My takeaway from this movie (which I saw with my husband on Thursday and our 16 year old son on Friday) is that we have to watch what garbage our kids consume. If they are exposed to poisonous ideologies, they will be conflicted. In Jojo's case, he had a parent(s) with a healthy moral compass, so he had an anchor at home to guide his better angels. His mother repeated the mantra for the insane time of Nazi rule..."They did what they could." This referred to people persecuted and killed for thwarting the dictatorship.
I completely took this as satire, and it's still a movie that made me cry for joy and sorrow. I will watch anything Taika Waititi creates, and I hope that he makes more thought-provoking cinema like this. Also, I loved the actor performances in this movie. Nothing was precious, just heartbreaking sometimes.
Suspense and sparse dialogue set this movie apart. It's so refreshing to get to use imagination to fill in the details. Rygh embodied the central character so much that I wondered if it was hard to reenter 2019. This is a paragon for a great movie on a microbudget. I hope that they make another. Bravo.
