Just so you know - I didn't like The Castle, Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom. Very Australian but so overacted, over directed and such over the top stereotypical characters. Not saying they were bad films just not for for me.
The Dry was perfect for me. A very Australian suspenseful film without the overacting and stereotypes.
Such a great focus on the main characters with a clever suspenseful detective story just complicated enough to captivate but not confuse (except for early on).
The haunting song "Under the Milky Way" actually sung by one of the main actors (Bebe Bettencourt) is now one of my favourites.
If you want something deeper than most Australian dramatic movies - this might be the one.

Firstly, two warnings:
1. No real spoilers below.
2. My wife and I did not like this film at all (but note we also hated Pulp Fiction and Little Miss Sunshine which were also very popular with many people).
The cinematography was excellent. Beautifully filmed and showing bits of Sth Korean life that I had never seen. Of course, some aspects, the unemployed family and the wealthy family themselves were probably atypical.
We both thought the story and most scenes were quite "old style": trite, contrived and quite trivial. The film didn't venture into slapstick thank goodness but the lines and jokes were simple old ones transposed into a modern setting. I chuckled slightly ONCE during the film. Just not my sort of humour (give me "Kives Out"). In terms of drama it was a bit like watching grass grow, OK interesting grass but that was all.
The ending had a strong message but was executed in a completely over the top and ridiculous manner, and out of all context (style-wise) with what preceded.
I can understand why a lot of people loved this film, and laughed a lot (although noone else was laughing in the cinema when we viewed the film). It has some strong elements in it but just dragged out too thinly for me.
Worth seeing this film just in case it is your thing.

Hee hee I gather a lot of viewers did not like this film. My wife and I, unexpectedly, did like it a lot.
The trailers lead one to expect an action SciFi space travel film (bad trailer!) and I can understand people who watch the film, expecting that, might be disappointed. Luckily I heard a detailed review before seeing the film (which said it was atrocious) and, although I like "hard core" SciFi (e.g. 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Day The Earth Stood Still (original), Blade Runner 2049 ), we thought we would give it a go.
The film is Science Fantasy (Physicists beware!) but that is totally irrelevant as it is just a "vehicle" to carry a story about human relationships in a difficult environment, with some rather weird little action scenes thrown in, and beautiful views of space and spaceships.
To give you some guidance, the closest similar movies I can think of are Arrival (2016) {loved it}, Never Let Me Go (2000) {loved it}, The Time Traveller's Wife {good} and The Fountain {loved it}.
If you ONLY like films like Marvel's "Avengers" series and Star Wars then this film might not be for you.
