So, yeah... They completely ruined the movie with this remake.
The first hour was very good. James McAvoy proves again what an incredible actor he is - he can take any role and make it interesting. Mackenzie Davis was also good in her role.
And then came the last act of the movie. Oh god... What a disaster. How can you take a movie with one of the most chilling ending in recent years and screw it up so much? I knew they wouldn't have the guts to recreate the original ending but I didn't expect them to ruin it completely.
5/10 Watch the original and then watch the first hour of this remake for James McAvoy.

So what happens when you take David Cronenberg, Darren Aronofsky, Stanley Kubrick and you put them all in a blender? You get "The Substance".
Great body horror in the style of the 80s. Great performance by Demi Moore (easily her best role ever), Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. Great direction, editing, sound, cinematography, production and makeup. All the elements are there but the ending is pretty dumb and the script seems to lack... Some substance.
Overall, great original and refreshing movie in the style of 80s Cronenberg.
Writer/director Coralie Fargeat definitely made her mark and I'll be looking forward to her next movie.
Highly recommended.
