I love this movie. In truth, I think 4 Weddings and a Funeral is perhaps a better movie. Actually I think 4 Weddings is the best romcon since The Philadelphia Story. However, About Time is more emotionally moving. What uplifts this bittersweet story is that it's not simply a romcon. And love does not conquer all. Almost, but not quite. The performances by it's stellar cast are superb. Even smaller performances by Withnail and I stars Richard Griffiths and Richard Grant resonate. New stars like Margot Robbie and Vanessa Kirby ably round out the star studded leads: Gleeson, McAdams, Nighy, Duncan, and Hollander. The mixture of humor and sentiment shows Curtis at the top of his game.
This movie was better than I expected. While I'm a fan of Heather Graham movies, ordinarily they are rather quirky. This time the story contained well hidden twists which gave it a deeper resonance. Everyone was excellent and the two young actresses both stood out as well.
Is it predictable? Of course, it's a rom com. The acting was solid, the songs and the dancing were great. The chemistry of the leads was convincing, and the pressure that parents put on their high achieving kids was all too real. I would probably say 81/2 rather than 9, but it's well worth the time. Which by the way it's half as long as typical Bollywood movies.
